Loved Avli in Bayside!
Just wanted to let you all know that we tried Avli last week and it's really good. It's down the block from Pelagos (a phenomenal Greek seafood restaurant) on Bell Blvd. It's very casual. Typical souvlaki place, ala Kati Allo, with MUCH better service and great food. The doner is so moist and juicy and the french fries rock. Both Avli and Kati Allo are much better options to Fontana for their souvlakis/gyros/etc. Fontana's still has great pizza though...

Where is Pelagos?
I tried Kati Allo a few weeks ago for the first time and wasn't overly impressed.. I'll stick with Fontana and Gyro Corner.

Pelagos is on Bell Blvd., up the block from Love My Shoes....I forget which Ave that is... 39th, maybe? It's a mainly seafood menu. They have maybe 4 meat dishes and that's it. They also have this one fish dish, where they wrap the fish in grape leaves, encrust it in a bunch of sea salt (like 2 inches thick) and cook it that way and they bring it flambeed to your table. Then they crack the sea salt shell and serve it. It's quite the spectacle. And very yummy.
I have to disagree. Kati Allo souvlaki is way better than the re-heated souvlakis they give you at Fontana.

re: GreekGddss
Hubby and I are looking forward to trying the new place soon. We had one fair meal at Pelagos when it opened and then one disastrous meal about five months later... They were out of most kinds of fish and somehow "temporarily" without a liquor license, none of which was explained to us before we sat down and none of which we ever got an apology for. Service that night was also a mess. Needless to say we haven't been back. I'm glad to hear the new place might be OK.

Avli's GREAT!
Completely blows away the competition everywhere but Astoria..
and even there it would stand out remarkably~It however is not in the same market as Pelagos despite them both being greek..
For an alternative to Pelagos, meaning a greek seafood restaurant, I'd go to *Mythos* on Northern Blvd and 196th street (on block west of Francis Lewis across from the Greek Church and Oasis Cafe)
