tried Madeline Bistro yesterday---meh
i expected so much more.
the caesar salad with blackened seitan was yuck:
way overdressed, TONS of croutons, dressing bland, the blackened seitan itself was ok.
the chicken-fried seitan sandwich was better: nice and crispy.
the french fries that we would have ordered with the sandwich were unavailable.
the menu was EXTREMELY limited.
had i known what i was going to be served at madeline's, i would have gone a little farther north to Vinh Loi Tofu where they serve very varied and interesting and TASTY dishes.
the next time i'm in the valley i'll try follow your heart.
there are plenty of restaurants that offer lots of interesting fantastic vegan and vegetarian food. (think of some of the vegan dishes served at homegirl cafe).
their best result was their vegan version of chicken fried steak--a dish i would not really gravitate to even when it's made with beef.
their salad was simply a poorly executed dish. i could get 10 different inventive vegan salads at 26 beach, all of which would be delicious.
there wasn't much menu choice, a situation made worse because they didn't even have all the menu items available (i.e. the french fries).
Madeline Bistro's flourless chocolate cake is amazing (you wouldn't know it's vegan). Follow Your Heart is yummy but so much more hippie casual - but they make some tasty mexican food. I love to do a bit of health food shopping at the connected store. Oh they also make some good berry pancakes.
If you are tempted for more vegan food try Vegan Plate in Studio City - the stir fried eggplant and pumpkin dish is pretty good.
