Donut fix?

While I prefer maple frosted with creme, a good donut is GREAT. Where to? (tried to do a search but got mostly dessert donuts restaurants and NOT bona fide donut shops)

  1. Since you won't give an area, I'll do extremes:
If you fancy an apple fritter along with other donuts, try this:
    Old Fashioned Donuts
    11248 S Michigan Ave
    Chicago, IL 60628

If you fancy a boston / bavarian cream like concoction, try this place, and get one for me too! Only one though. You will NOT be able to eat more than one of these cream filled pieces of pure heaven. They weigh like a pound each, and are filled with REAL CUSTARD. Call ahead, or be prepared for a serious wait:
    5348 N Clark St
    Chicago, IL 60640

gordeaux, appreciate you sharing your expertise. I didn't put an area down because I don't eat them THAT often and a great donut is worth the jaunt, especially if it is only once in a while.

      2. NPR did a segment a year or two ago on the best donut shops in Chicagoland; I didn't think I could get a craving for donuts by listening to someone describe them on the radio, but I most certainly did.

You might try searching NPR's archives on the web for this piece, which should be a good start (and maybe the end too) for your search.

        1. Dunk Donuts on Lake Street in Melrose park makes excellent maple donuts; both cake and raised. They also do a more than respectable glazed sour cream donut.

          1. In the early '80s there used to be a brand of cake donuts sold in all the grocery stores, available in plain, powdered sugar, or chocolate-covered varieties. Does anyone recall the brand name?

            1. definitely the homemade donuts with expresso pudding at the resteraunt Bin. They are so perfect even if there isnt a lot of variety

              1. i love dinkel's bakery on lincoln off the paulina brown line stop. amazing donuts. amazing everything, actually. there is good reason that section of lincoln is renamed honorary after mr. dinkel himself.
