Sad news today of the death of English beer and whisky writer Michael Jackson. For the last thirty years, Jackson was probably the most prominent journalistic voice in the world of beer and whisky, championing craft brewing and single malt Scotch before many people, particularly Americans, knew what they were. His compendiums on and tastings of single malts and beer inspired a legion of followers as well as its share of imitators.

Mr. Jackson, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, was 65.

A nice set of memories is compiled here: http://www.whiskyfun.com/

The news swept across the homebrewer/beer geek community yesterday. We are all in mourning. Everyone seems to have met him a few times (even me) He loved sharing what he knew and meeting with people. He wasn't haughty or snooty as some beer/wine "experts" can be (you hear me in your "Office", pops?)

truly a great loss.

How sad. I saw him on Conan O'Brian a while back and thought he was one of the funniest, most interesting characters ever. I think his fly was down when he was on the show.

Not being a member of the home-brewing community, I thought of someone else when I saw the headline and wondered why it was on chowhound.com. Now I stand corrected. THIS Michael Jackson seems to have been a helluva guy.

Jackson's writing and talks were full of wit and humor. He also had a terrific televised "The Beer Hunter" series which appeared on PBS in the early 90s. That program was a perfect combination of education and entertainment.
