Major Disappointment at Sarah's
Went to Sarah's last weekend. I think there were some health violations related to the beef shawarma sitting at the bottom of the shawarma wheel after they slice it off.
So now they cut the meat from the wheel and put it into a warming tray that is filled with some kind of liquid. Looks like pure grease to me. The meat soaks in the grease and is completely saturated when they put it in the pita.
My shawarma was so greasy that my tray was filled with it half way through the shawarma. Gross.
Also, one of the best things about the beef shawarma at Sarah's was the the meat got crisp and charred on the wheel which gave it great flavour. Even though it was somewhat charred, it was still tender and very flavourful. Also, when the meat remains on the spit, the chunks of fat cook off. In addition to the meat being greasy, there were chewy chunks of fat in the shawarma. Again, gross.
Sarah's was one of my favourite shawarma places in TO, but if remains as greasy as it was last time, I won't be back. Or else, I'll stick to the falafels.
Perhaps one options is to ask them to slice it right off the wheel for me. I asked them that last time, and she both pretended to not understand me and gave me a dirty look.
Maybe I'll tell them why I want it like that and if they don't do it, no more beef shawarma at Sarah's.

The Sarah's I think of is the beer-focused resto-bar on the Danforth--where is the Sarah's you're talking about?
