FESTIVE but not too loud for party of 12?

I posted a while back asking for recommendations for a restaurant where a group of 12 (flying in, primarily from L.A.) could surprise my mom for her 65th birthday.

I definitely need to find a festive place (my mom hates sedate, stuffy places) and the suggestions I received (Lupa, A Voce) were certainly festive, but I'm concerned that they are perhaps too noisy for an older crowd to hear one another.

So I'm trying to find what seems like the impossible balance -- festive, celebratory YET not crazy-loud where we might be straining to hear one another.

Any thoughts on places ---anywhere in Manhattan really-- where I can find this combination? Italian cuisine preferable, but I'm willing to veer from that if need be...

Thanks so much.

What day of the week are you looking at? That may change the "noise" factor
