I had some excellent homemade key lime pie at Firefly's BBQ in Framingham 2 weeks ago. It was so good that many customers kept going back for seconds until the pie was gone. They had to bring out another key lime pie. Where can I find homemade key lime pie in the greater Boston area? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

It's amazing. This came up exactly one year ago. Must be something about the end of August. Is it key lime season now :)?

I saw bags of key limes at Stop&Shop in Somerville yesterday. The key limes came from Mexico. Don't they grow key limes in Florida?

Lots of Floridians have key lime trees in their back yards, but I don't think key limes are grown commercially in Florida in large quantity. Most of the key limes we see around here likely come from Mexico, Central America, or even Texas and California.

As for the original poster's question, I'm sorry, but I've never had a great key lime pie around here (besides the ones I made myself). Of course, getting into what makes a great key lime pie (pie crust vs. cookie-based crust, whipped cream vs. meringue top, etc.) can be almost akin to a religious debate...

Just wonder when you said customers kept going back for second until the pie was gone, does it mean you were having a buffet?

If it is a buffet, how is the food and what is the price tag?

Yes, Firefly's has an all you can eat bbq buffet on Sunday from 11:30am-2:30pm. The price at the Firefly's in Framingham was $12.99 a person plus drinks. The Firefly's in Framingham also has a lunch buffet Monday to Friday from 11:30am-1:30pm. Only the Framingham location has a lunch buffet. I'm not sure how much the lunch buffet costs. When I went to the Firefly's in Quincy on Mother's Day the buffet price was $16.99 a person plus drinks. Maybe the price is higher in Quincy because it's a new place? I like the food at Firefly's especially their St. Louis ribs, pulled chicken, fried chicken and pulled pork. I can honestly say that I have never had a bad meal at Firefly's. The Firefly's in Quincy is closer to me but I prefer the Framingham location because it has a bigger parking lot. I tried to go to the Firefly's in Quincy on Fathers Day and the parking lot was full. The wait to get in was about 2 hours! We left and drove to the Clam Box in Ipswich instead.

I went to Hoff's Bakery in Medford and bought a key lime pie. It was frozen so I left it out to defrost. The 12" key lime pie was pre-sliced with a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream and toasted coconut. The pie was good but not as good as the pie I got at Firefly's in Framingham.
