Pastores (Mission)

  • 9

Went there because I heard to chiliquiles were great. After eating them I will have to agree! My wife and I love to order chiliquiles because the style differs widely.

Pastores style is a very crisp dish with a tomatillo sauce and a little queso fresca. Irma the owner, cook, waitress, etc. is a very sweet and caring mother type. She brought us a delicious squash, tomato, chile, onion dish as a complementary side. I ordered mine with carne asada and my wife had chicken. Irma showed us the beef she uses and told us that she gets it in Marin County.

The place appears spotless and nicely if simply decorated. I can't vouch for the other dishes on the limited menu, but the chiliquiles were perfect!

  1. My husband and I go there for breakfast on a pretty regular basis for those chiliquiles, I'm ashamed to say it's the only thing we have ever ordered. We tell each other this time we'll order something new but once we sit down Chiliquiles it is. There just too good...She did once give us a Chile Relleno to try and it was wonderful, so I know her other offerings must be good. I want to go there for dinner but whenever I've driven by the door is always cosed

    1. I never get anything else either. Pastores is the one place where I even eat the beans.

Always pays to ask for the tomatillo salsa, in case she doesn't put it out.

      1. I've been here for dinner a few times - delicious! The space is clean and bright. The service is warm and friendly. Definitely give it a try!

We drove by last night intending to go there for dinner. The blinds were drawn and the closed sign was out. On a Thursday? Anyone know if they're always closed on Thursdays for dinner?

We went to Lotus Garden instead, about which I'll post separately.

Recently I've noticed Pastores has been shut, then open again the next time I've gone by.

As it's a one person operation, if the owner needs to leave, she leaves. A couple of months ago we went to lunch there, she took our order, brought us our food, and asked us if we could watch the place while she delivered something down the street.

So I think it can be hit and miss. If she's open I'm, planning on eating there this weekend.

She is such a nice person that if she hadnded me a broom and asked me to sweep up I would. Open seven days a week and running the place by herself is a feat.

Yes, and remember she's open for breakfast. Probably doesn't pay to stay open if no one's there by 6 or 6:30. Call if you're not sure.

I haven't seen them open in the morning in a long time.

Just wanted to push this to the top of the list by mentioning I had dinner here last Saturday night.

I had the Pollo con Rajas for the first time and it was a wonderful dish. The menu description simply says Chicken Breast w/ Chile strips. What I got was a flattened piece of chicken, pan-fried served with large pieces of cooked Poblano chile on top -- something like a Mexican wiener schnitzel! Very simple and delicious. As I pass by the place seems open all the time now. Can't wait to go back again.
