Quick Manhattan Weekend Report
Not much here that will be news to anyone - but we ate a lot this weekend, and it was all great (except for a very expensive meal that was very disappointing).
Gelato at Cones - yogurt gelato, dulce de leche, grapefruit were the favorites
Chocolate Chip/Walnut cookies at Levain - to die for
Bagels, nova, and whitefish at Essa Bagel - awesome
Donuts at the Donut Plant - coconut cream and valrhona chocolate, excellent
Chai Macaron from Bouchon Bakery - spicy!
Lobster roll and mussels at Pearl Oyster Bar - love it
Pastrami on rye at Katz's - wow, always great
Blue Ribbon Sushi - an old haunt of friends we were with, great meal, the best quality fish I've had in many years - the white tuna and spanish mackerel were revelations. The rolls were good, but the sashimi was better.
And, last, but not least, Babbo. What a meal. This place deserves every accolade it gets. The music can be a bit distracting (80's rock just a bit too loud really doesn't fit the environment). The service was stellar, and of course, the food....
Heirloom tomato caprese - as good as any I've ever had
BBQ octopus - fabulous, incredible smoke flavor
Lamb's tongue - wow, this kitchen knows how to put things together that really work, excellent
Beef cheek ravioli - wow
Garganelli with mushrooms - very nice
Lamb and mint "love letters" - wow wow wow, great flavors/combination
Gnocchi with oxtail - wow to the 10th, incredibly good, best dish of the night
Lamb chops - again, as good as any I've ever had, very generous portion as well for $29
Great desserts - gelatos, sorbetti, chocolate and pistachio semmifredo
Great wines, all suggested by the sommelier, all from the encyclopedic Italy-only menu. Trust his advice.
All that and more for $250 a couple all in. Well well worth it.
The only miss all weekend was WD-50 - see the thread below for a play by play account.
