Arrivederci in Hillcrest is very good. For homestyle Southern Italian food, Frankie's Italian Deli in Mira Mesa is pretty good. There are a couple of places in Tierrasanta - and I can't remember their names, but they're both on Santo Road - that are quite good.

The best italian food I've had in San Diego is at my Mom's house. . .but she doesn't cook for random strangers. Sadly, the next best Italian food was at Sorrentino's in Clairemont (not the pizzeria that still stands, but the restaurant which was next door). That restaurant has long since closed, but when it was around that was the best place in San Diego.

I've really enjoyed Mangia Bene in downtown El Cajon, of all places! Good calzones, excellent saltimboca. Never had a bad meal there. Atmosphere is nice enough for a date but also fine for a special family meal.

Bang for the buck??? Easily Mama Mia in Pacific Beach - genuine, homespun Italian without the ridiculous prices that seem to dominate the SD Italian food scene.

Francesco is a force of nature and his wife cooks like every Italian's mama.

I'm a big fan of The Godfather on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. It's in a run down strip mall, but the inside will surprise you.

Pasquales on Prospect and Sante are also very good.

Trattoria Positano (Cardiff), Trattoria Aqua (La Jolla) - although it's technically Mediterranean cuisine, and Bella Italia (Mira Mesa).

Also the old Vigilucci's in Cardiff (now Chiotti's or some) had the best Italian style pizza.
