Gei Dan Jai 雞蛋仔 (Hong Kong-style waffle-like street snack)
Does anyone know where I can get a stove-top iron for making 雞蛋仔 (Gei Dan Jai)? It is a waffle like street snack that's very popular in Hong Kong. I'll be willing to go to a store in the LA area, order one online, or call up any store elsewhere by phone if they're willing to ship me one.
Any suggestions for local stores that make good, fresh, Gei Dan Jai is much appreciated as well!
Thanks!
I have no idea where to get such a waffle iron, but if the picture below is what you are talking about then Tasty Garden in Arcadia has this dessert item on the menu.

Definitely Tasty Garden in Arcadia. You can also get it with condensed milk on the side--excellent stuff. You might try asking them where you can buy the iron.

You can get fresh gei daan jai at the food stands near the Hong Kong Superstore in Rowland Heights... at least the last I looked.
Mmmmm... now I'm hungry for it!

Where is the Hong Kong Superstore on Colima (cross-street fine)? What else would you recommend getting from the stands? Sounds interesting.

It's on Colima maybe a block or so east of Fullerton Rd., on the south side of the street. The stands (the number varies) are south of the main entrance of the market -- there's usually the gei daan jei place (but sometimes not) and usually the fish ball place, others vary.

Not sure where you are located, but many Hong Kong Style Cafe(s) in SGV serve fresh Gei Daan Jai.

You may have to get the iron from overseas??

You might want to check out the store under Empress Pavilion in Bamboo Plaza in Chinatown. They have a lot of asian cookwares and utensils. I know that the waffle iron is sold around here because a week ago, I had a home-made version made by friends. They have the iron.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll definitely check out the cookware store in chinatown. I've also called around a bit since my original post. Even in the worst case scenario, it seems that I can get this store in the Toronto area to ship me a gei daan jai iron if I'm desparate. Not the most convenient but it sure beats a trip to HK. Meanwhile, I'll definitely check out one of those suggestions of food stands and restaurants to satisfy my craving. I'm on the Westside by the way, and I doubt that I can find gei daan jai anywhere near here. So SGV here I come.

Ooh! Do keep me posted if you ever manage to find the iron. I've looked everywhere for them with no success - SF, LA, even a few places in Toronto!

My parents are going to the Toronto area this weekend and are going to check a store in Markham for me. Apparently it's an overseas branch of a big Hong Kong kitchen supply store. If they have any luck getting the iron, i'll get the store info and post it.

Just came across this posting, I am in NYC but have been looking for one of these... I almost considered trying to make one using a takoyaki pan but I think the "flip" is really important here... any luck in the Toronto area?

Pacific Mall at Markham (Ontario Canada) has the egg puff maker. There are 2 sizes for the maker. Small one is $35 CAD and big one (regular HK size) is $45. The store is the one closest to the north entrance of the mall.

Yes, do post back if you find it, I've been hunting for one as well, but in the Bay Area.
Thanks in advance!

I got my Egg Puff Maker from this site: http://www.66emart.com/en/product/ite...
I live in Vancouver, Canada ... the shipping cost more than the skillet! And it's quite heavy! I burnt myself a couple of times already while cooking! Oouch!
For those who've made the Gai Daan Zai at home ... can you share some tips? I tried it recently, but the batter kept sticking onto the Egg Puff Maker ... and I couldn't get it to be like the ones at the store. Mine was a bit flat in shape. Any cooking tips anyone can share? Thanks! :D
The ingredients I used are as follows:
• 4 oz (100 g) Flour
• 1 oz (25 g) Corn Starch, Tapioca Starch, or Custard Powder
• 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
• 2 eggs
• 4 oz (100 g) Sugar
• 4 oz (125 ml) Water
• 2 oz (60 ml) Evaporated Milk

Williams Sonoma is now carrying the hong kong waffle maker that can be used on a burner for about 50 bucks. I cant find a link or listing online, but it is featured in the store . Used it this morning with the 10 dollar pre-mix to make some for the first time. Very tasty and cool looking. Easy. But you need to get the timing and temp correct. - not sure if anyone sells an electric version in the US. I guess I have one more item to pick up the next time I am over there.

Has anyone seen this on any area menu other than at Tasty Garden? Do any of the other HK cafes have it?
