I'm putting together a gift package for a friend who was very generous with a referral. A friend of this friend tells me the recipient-to-be likes an Indian place near ASU, but she can't recall the name of the place. Any ideas?

Delhi Palace is a strong possibility. It's practically right across Rural from campus.

There are several within walking distance of ASU, including Copper Kettle and Kohinoor, but my money would be on Delhi Palace here. It's the best known, it has been around the longest, it's walkable from the campus, and it's generally well-liked.

Another nod for Udupi Cafe. I haven't been to Dehli Palace (yet...) so I can't comment on it personally beyond that it has a good reputation here.

Udupi Cafe is an all vegetarian (mostly vegan), south Indian restaurant specializing in dosai, uttapam, idyl, and other south indian staples (though the curries are less regional). I've been many times and have thoroughly enjoyed each experience. In particular the dosai, the appetizer platter, and the more southern curries are excellent. One should know however, that Udupi has had problems with the health department in the past though I haven't heard of any recent trouble there and have never seen or experienced anything there that would make me doubt the food.

Has anyone been to Udupi Cafe lately? I'm wondering if the food is still awesome, and how is the service. I haven't been there yet, but a friend is coming in from out of town and she LOVED it there when she lived here. Any recent dinner diners would be appreciated. Thanks!

I was there about a month ago, although it was for the lunch buffet. Everything seemed up to par in terms of food and service.

The food here is great, as always! I just discovered their version of palak paneer is the best I've had (of course, I've yet to try other places, like Priya or Royal Taj). My opinions are based on Udupi's, Tandoori TimesS (close second!), Jewel of the Crown'S (haven't tried their PP, yet), and Kohinoor (didn't like the two paneer dishes I've tried here).

Try the dosai, the appetizer platter, and mutter paneer, as well.
