Pre theater

texann Aug 27, 2007 11:51 AM

I am coming to NYC in two weeks, staying in the Village and will be going to the Neil Simon theater on Sat. night. I would like restaurant suggestions for dinner before the show (8:00 p.m.) Nothing as upscale as Eleven Madison Park. Preferrably just good "American" food (as opposed to something exotic) in one of those out of the way places that locals frequent rather than a tourist attraction.

Would you feel more comfortable staying in the vicinity, or do you mind traveling a bit and eating earlier?

Well, I would feel better staying between the Village and the theater just to keep it simple.

I vote for Markt! 21st and 6th Avenue. They make great steak frites, a killer burger, mussels...all kinds of great food with a Belgian flair.

See - there is a perfect example of a place I would have never found on my own. THAT is why I turn to the locals. You all are so willing to help out and share such great things about your wonderful City. thanks for the tip

If you are up for mussels and frites, I also love Cafe des Bruxelles - to my mind, the best frites in the city. Their steaks are also quite good, as is the endive salad.

Hells Kitchen (in the theater district) for flavorful, southwestern food....A local fav. Or Vice Versa in West 50s for solid Italian in lively, cool atmosphere...full of theater professionals.

I second Vice Versa only a few blocks from the Neil Simon.
I also saw "Hairspray" and then had dinner at Vice Versa afterwards.
Deeeeelicious! And they even have an outdoor area which is lovely.
