romantic french dinner in OC
Hi OC chows,
I am treating a couple to a romantic french dinner in the OC as a birthday gift. They want french food. I did a web search and came up with the following names:
Tradition by Pascal
Which do you prefer? Is there another place you would recommend? Thjis is a special occasion dinner, so I don't mind splurging a little.
Studio- Declining in degrees, by far the most expensive of the group. Bang for the buck ratio not really there. The other three are roughly in the same price range. I wouldn't consider it particularly "French", maybe more cal-fusion, though they use classical techniques. Location is nice, room a little cold, as is the service. If you want to go there, definitely try to get a window seat, though I also think the view is overrated. The food is fine, but for the price...
Pascal is the old warhorse, still very solid, well done food, nice service. Still feels a little worn around the edges despite it's remodel a few years ago. Location in a strip mall not the best, but the room set up is conducive to conversation and fairly romantic.
Pinot Provence; have not been there since Florent left. Prior to that I really felt it was underrated and perhaps the best of the Patina restaurants. Large room with multiple smaller rooms off to the sides.
Marche Moderne- the new kid on the block from the previous chef at Pinot. Been there a few times, and have been quite impressed. Portion size is actually quite generous (except desserts) with bistro style fare. Service is improving. Least formal feeling of the three (not that Pinot and Pascal feel stiff). Inside room is very cramped, not at all romantic. Outside patio has a few cabana booths that definitely can set the mood. Located in a mall, but doesn't feel like such out on the patio.
