Firefly - review
So, two girlfriends and I went to Firefly on Friday and since it seems few people report on the place, thought I'd do it!
Our reservation was for 7:15, and two of us were early. They let us sit at our table even though our third person hadn't arrived - which is not the case in many restaurants sadly. So, we sat...the waiter brought us water and very tasty parker house-style rolls.
All three of us skipped alcoholic beverages because of their high price and calorie points. Another time, though.
Appetizers: one friend had the shrimp and grits and said they were delicious - they looked creamy. My friend and I had the matzo ball soup, which we were worried about getting for fear of comparing it to the lovingly homemade versions of our grandmas and mothers. While I LOVE my moms, the version at Firefly was very good - even considering how hot it was outside. I would get that again in a heartbeat.
Dinner: friend 1 had the tuna BLT and enjoyed it. It looked tasty with a big portion of tuna. Other friend had the roast chicken on top of something that was green. She said it was OK, but would have really liked to have a a vegetable served with it. Even though I didn't taste the dish, i probably would have wanted some veggies with it, too. I had the chicken pot pie. It was tasty - nothing extra special, but good.
Desserts: the three of us shared two. One was the peach dessert - i have no idea what was in it, but it was good. I do remember the brownie sundae though. I have my priorities! Very good peanut butter ice cream, a wonderfully dense chocolate brownie, and yummy fresh whipped cream. Nothing fancy - but as far as sundaes go it was good.
The bill for three of us with tax and tip was $115. I thought it was a little high considering I wasn't blown away by anything, but it was an enjoyable night with good service, good decor, and the discovery of decent matzo ball soup in the city.
Interesting how you mention the roast chicken coming with no veggies. I think I ordered this the last time I was there and my boyfriend got some sort of veal dish if I recall correctly. Most of their main courses don't come with sides so we had to order some veggies on the side. They were tasty---but this certainly jacks up the price of the meal. Not a huge fan when the main course is already in the $20s+ range and then you have to spend $8 on a side of squash or something.
That being said it sounds like the new chef is putting out some good food. Perhaps its time to return.

The veggie side dishes were mostly not "vegetables". there was a squash gratin and some other equally as yummy sounding, yet not so figure friendly, options. It'd have been nice if there were a little bit of roasted summer squash or something else that is less heavy at the peak of yummy summer produce time.

That's a big nod to the matzo ball soup. Sounds like a nice soup to have with a salad at the bar there. Thanks for the review.
