Has 'Town' in Oahu lost its luster?
My last two experiences there have been surprisingly mediocre. Maybe the attention put on the new place has taken focus away from the original? I will start by saying I have never been a super-fan. For a restaurant committed to using fresh, local ingredients, I thought there were very few preperations that let the ingredients shine through. Too many little frills and uncessary touches. Still, it was pretty good. I've been there for lunch twice in the past two weeks and both times it was far from up to par. The first time at least service was great. The second time major attitude from the servers: one came over to remove an extra set of utensils from our table, with a glum, bored look on her face that pervaded our entire meal and 'not noticing' that our water glasses were empty...among other things. I have never been able to get a rare burger here ever...even though I always order it rare and this time it was so far from rare as to be charred beyond recognition. If you're going to go to all the trouble to get this great beef (which would be a steal at $8 or whatever, it'd probably be $50 in New York,) than the least you could do is do it justice. The lemonade is good, though...

I never was that impressed, but have only had dinner there. The touted 'Best Chicken in the World' really wasn't and I, too, remember overwhelming flavors with one of the appetizers & a weak wine list.... and the longest trip to the bathroom ever - thought I was going to come out in Kahala ;-) MUCH prefer 3660, sitting at the bar, if you want a more casual atmosphere.

i've always found the service at town, especially for lunch to be variable to poor. The food was always good (except for one pulled pork sandwich). Most places will not cook a burger rare any more, too much liablility. I know when I order it that way from Big City Diner they make me sign a "chit" saying I accept full responsiblity etc. I understand it is hard to send something back at lunchtime when you have to get back to work and service was slow to start with.....

One thing I disagree with mberniker on is the statement that the food has "Too many little frills and unnessacary touches" and the ingredients don't shine. IMO, the food is unmessed with and simply prepared. The soups, salads and entrees rarely feature more than four or five ingredients and are not heavily dressed with sauces, etc.
