Westside Cheesesteaks

Was reading the recent thread about Fredo's and realized I'd been to several of my favorite westside cheesesteak places so thought I'd give a report.

I recently was turned on to Victor Jr.'s, on the north side of Washington in Culver City across from a big studio. Really like the people there -- the women in the morning couldn't be more helpful, and the guys in the eve give good suggestions. Really like their meatballs, and they have tasty soft rolls. Went with a couple of friends for dinner and liked the Italian salad and the eggplant parm. Also ordered a cheesesteak, which they highly recommended, and I liked it -- ,meaty, cheesy, good. But it wasn't really a philly cheesesteak, meat was a bit more thickly cut, and I liked the other dishes better. (A loaded pizza our neighbors ordered looked great!)

Took a jersey friend to Philly West, where he ordered the cheesesteak and I had the cheeseburger. Surprise of that lunch were the fries, which have disappointed before, but this time ordered well/crispy they were quite good. Loved my burger -- still my rec for the best in town, 1/2-pound, flame-grilled medium rare with a crust and drippy goodness served on a roll for barely $6. Friend liked his cheesesteak, but thought it was a little slim on the meat. (Solution: order the double meat which makes a just-under $6 cheesesteak just over $8.)

The other day, stopped into Markie D's for a late lunch cheesesteak combo. What I was served was a HUGE delicious too-hot-to-pick-up cheesesteak with onions and sweet and hot peppers. Maybe it was they were in a lull or maybe the guy liked me, but this sandwich was immense, and tasty. (Bigger than I remember their past cheesesteaks being.) The waffle-cut fries were done crispy as I'd asked and filled a separate basket. I have a good appetite and I was hungry but I took half of each home for a bonus dinner. (Markie D's cheesesteak, fries and soda combo = 8.99 = $9.73 with tax and I tipped the change and another buck.) My only quibble was that it was real light on the cheese but I neglected to specify whether I wanted provolone, white american, or whiz.

  1. I almost completely agree with you about Markie D's (my only quibble is that I have never found it to be "real light on the cheese"). Markie D's IMO makes the hands-down best cheesesteaks in LA, not to mention mouth-watering criss-cut fries, and a single combo for $8.99 can EASILY feed two people. Whenever I go, I'm always shocked that there isn't a line snaking around the block. This is a place that truly deserves to become a venerated LA institution.

    1. The curly fries are dipped in batter and seasoned as well - they are great... It's my go-to place for cheesesteaks and hoagies... one caviat - it's one of the few places I've eaten at where my blood pressure literally soars from the salt.
