The former Buca Giovanni space at 800 Greenwich (where Greenwich and Mason hit Columbus) will come alive in "about three weeks" as La Trappe Cafe and Bistro, featuring good Belgian Ales and related food.

I had been noticing the renovations going on, and today I caught up with Mike, the young progenitor of the new venture. He said the street-level section (if you recall Buca Giovanni, you can picture it) will house will house the "Cafe", which will feature a bar and strictly Belgian-style snacks, including moules frites and the like. The larger basement space will house the "Bistro" and feature a short but varying menu with a mix of influences including Italian. Mike is himself Italian, though he has lived in Belgium and loves the beer and the food. His family owns the building that houses the restaurant (though they didn't own Buca) so he hopefully will have the time to build up something good without too much pressure.

La Trappe will be the physically closest resto or bar to me (360 yards, says MS Streets and Trips) and I love Belgian beer above all, as well as the eats associated with it, so there couldn't be a use of the space which would make me happier. Unless, of course, a Shanghainese "xiao chi" restaurant had materialized there.
