Looking for a nice, date-worthy dinner spot in that nook south of 42nd around 9th avenue. Think medium-priced, good food, cold drinks. Have been to Market Cafe a couple times & always leave feeling a bit queasy, like I've just eaten at the bottom of a swimming pool? Any help'd be much appreciated, thnx.

Have you been to the West Bank Cafe? It's on the block where cars exit from the Lincoln Tunnel onto 42nd St. (b/t 9th & 10th Avs.). The New American cuisine served there is excellent. Service is very friendly and efficient. The decor is attractive, tables are nicely spaced, seating is comfortable, and the noise level is conversation-friendly. I think it would be a fine place for a dinner date.

I second WBC. Definitely make a reservation if you are going pre-theater as it gets filled up then, but unlike many restaurants one can still have a conversation without shouting when it is a full house. I love the apps and we usually make a meal with 6-7 apps.

Good upscale Mexican food at Hells Kitchen on 9th. Very inventive and certainly not burritos and tacos.
