hi chowfolk,
my friend and i want to go out for snacks and drinks tomorrow, but we're looking for recommendations on where the best most inexpensive bang for the food and wine buck is given that my friend is extremely house-poor (reno reno reno) and is a new mom, so needless to say, not a lot of cash but very high standards - its always the way!
we're open to anything in the dufferin, king, church, bloor quadrant, but frankly tend to stay west of yonge for the most part.
i don't know if i can define 'inexpensive' for you, because whenever i ask the same question, the response i get is sort of 'as close to free as possible' :-)
i know this might seem like an impossible request, but i'm just looking for recommendations.
i've been thinking of places like la palette, the paddock, etc, but i'm sure i'm overlooking some gems.
thanks in advance!!

IMO...the patio at Shanghai is great and the interior looks cool, but the food is so awful, their burger is a too small for the bun frozen preformed patty, brutal, and on top of that the way the kitchen staff handles it is worse, I once saw a guy who usually is behind the counter, in street clothes reach over the counter from the restaurant side and pick something (bacon bits?) out of a bowl and stuff it in his mouth...total disregard for customers both in attitude and more importantly hygiene.

I don't know if I'd ever describe La Palette as "inexpensive". Look at spending around $40 pp for appetizer/entree and a glass of wine. It's a lovely place, though, and I'm always happy to recommend it.

Weezie's is ever so slightly out of the quadrant you gave, but I'm going to recommend it anyways because I think it's a charming little restaurant with excellent food. It'll be in the same price range as La Palette.

You should also consider Volo on Yonge St. The food is just passable, but their wine and beer selection is fantastic and more than makes up for the food. You're looking at about $30pp here.

One note... some of the places on this list are bars/clubs and do charge cover (I can confirm this for Bovine Sex Club, Wreck Room, Croc Rock, Labyrinth and Dance Cave). Great if you're planning on going anyways, but do factor this into the budget.

If it's food you're looking for, write off everything except Volo, Xe Lua and Insomnia.

You are taking a risk eating at Sneaky Dee's, Toby's, Asean Buffet or Free Times. The food is bad at the best of times.

The remaining places on the list either don't serve food at all, or are also really nothing worth writing home about... Souz Dal does a fantastic cocktail, tho.
