Les Halles, was there yesterday and really enjoyed it. The steak au pouive(i think that is how its spelled) was my entree and it was excellent. For an app I have a calmari & shaved fennel salad, delicious!!

I heartily second Les Halles. The frites are outstanding, as is the hangar steak.

Artisanal (Park ave/E 32nd) has a nice Streak Frittes as well - unexpectedly nice tender cut fo meat, and not too huge but perfect size dish. It's a bustling french brasserie - loud, fun, AMAZING CHEESE list - start with the fondu for the table. Also has great bread - highly recommended for a fun night. enjoy, happy bday

How about Marseille, on Eighth Avenue? Great frites.

            Balthazar >>> Les Halles

and the onion soup, raw bar and the bakery next door just adds to it.

I'd go Balthazar, Les Halles (the one on Park Ave. South not John) and I quite like Steak & Frites (the place!).
