San Francisco Bay Area

Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Hercules Recap … or is that hub?

Here’s a little summary based on various reports, some of them mine

CHOKO'S CUISINE

A pretty Filipino restaurant with great chicken salad, steam table items house-made green papaya condiment and a few desserts like halo halo and ube jam.

CREEKSIDE CAFÉ

Nice (if unexciting food-wise) internet cafe serving bubble tea, coffee, breakfast pastries, bagels, a few sandwiches and ice cream. The blueberry muffin or the green or black bubble teas are the best bets. There’s free wifi and a purchase allows 1/2 hour free use of a terminal. In the afternoon it is a hang-out for local kids playing games on the computers.

DRAGON TERRACE

Chinese restaurant … not much more to say about it.

HERCULES FARMERS MARKET

This market in the Home Depot parking lot is pleasant and has a good selection of vendors. It is held Saturday evening from 4pm to 8pm from May thru the end of October.

KINDER'S MEATS

Known for the ball tip steak sandwich this is a small deli and meat market

L & L HAWAIIAN BBQ

There is nothing special about this chain with various Hawaiian plate lunches. It's great greasy hangover food. The Lau-Lau plate is ok but stay away from the seafood selection. Most of them are from frozen seafood and fried until it's almost dried.

LUCKY (ALBERTSONS)

This market carries food for the local ethnic communities, especially Filipino. There’s a nice selection of wine. Note that at the time of this post the market is due to be changed from Albertsons to Lucky.

MARYLOU'S HOMEMADE DELIGHTS

Marylou is the queen of local Filipino food. The quality is high and the food is delicious. The steam table food is fresh and replenished often. Some dishes are made to order. The menu changes every day relying on what was best at the market that day. . On the weekends there is a nice selection of baked goods which are also the best in the area.

RSM ORIENTAL FOOD MART AND RESTAURANT

Right next door to Sunshine bakery it is half store and half restaurant with steam table. The fish dishes are good. They have a large selection of Filipino groceries and some baked goods from Daly City’s The Bread Basket Bakery. There are a few tables. The staff is especially friendly and helpful.

SUNFLOWER BAKERY

The caramel cake at this Filipino bakery is the star. The cream puffs are very good too. There is a selection of cakes, rolls, bread and pastries. There are one or two savory dishes.

SHINSEN SUSHI

There are very favorable reports about the sushi and the prices are good. There is a 10% discount for active teachers. Tues and Wednesday there is an all-night happy hour with 25% off appetizers and $2 Asahi.

WON THAI CUISINE

A pretty Thai restaurant with excellent food and the best coconut ice cream

SPECIAL EVENTS

St Patrick’s Church celebrates Simbang Gabi with sunrise Filipino breakfasts a few weeks before Christmas.

    1. Wow, thanks for all of the reports! I go to Hercules quite often to visit my girlfriend, and you've given me a couple new places to go. I usually grab quick take-home dinners from Mary Lou or Dragon Terrace's Wor Won Ton soup (I like it a lot, except the shrimp aren't so good, which is ok, because you only get like 2 of them). I need to try Choko's, Won Thai and RSM.
