Where to go with kids

hanc Aug 20, 2007 05:08 PM

I will be visiting chicago for the first time next week with a 5 & 3 year old. Any suggestions for restaurants that are kid friendly? I'd like to visit a good dimsum/chinese & italian restaurant.

If your kids are well behaved you can take them anywhere.

How upscale/downscale do you want to go?

I will be bringing the portable DVD. It'll buy me at least 2 hours. I think fine dining is out of the question but would like to eat at a decent restaurant. I enjoy Mom and Pop restaurants known for good food.

Coco Pazzo cafe is close to your hotel and has outdoor seating which is nice as long as the weather cooperates. http://www.cocopazzocafe.com/

Or if you jump in a cab ($10 cab ride or so), you could trek over to the West Loop to Greektown where there are lots of family friendly options: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/119233

Or in the same West Loop area, Wishbone on Washington - http://www.wishbonechicago.com/

The restaurants around your hotel tend to be either very touristy, chains, or higher end. The West loop options in particular are more the mom and pop type places you mentioned.

Where in the area (city neighborhood or suburban town) will you be staying and/or spending your time?

I will be staying at the Westin Michigan Avenue.

          A couple of suggestions.

There's a food court in Water Tower Place right near the Westin, including foodlife, which has a lot of options - www.foodlifechicago.com

A few blocks south on Michigan Avenue (600 N Michigan) is Grand Lux Cafe. I went there with my cousin and his kids that age, and it was perfect.

Osteria via Stato is a very solid choice for Italian. It's in the River North Area. The risotto is fantastic. I was recently there with my three young kids, they loved it and we felt quite comfortable with them there.

For Italian, don't forget Scoozi (on W. Superior?), it's VERY kid-friendly. In fact most of the LEYE places are quite reasonable with kids. MityNice, at the Water Tower, has a great kids' menu and decent enough food for adults.

Yes, and on Sunday evening at Scoozi! (W Huron) your kids can don a toque and cook their own pizzas.
