Public House, Chester NJ and Mendham News
As locals to the area and recently decided to try the new incarnation of the Public House which was opened and renovated last year under new ownership. Although the renovation was very nice and very much needed, the new restaurant left us quite dissappointed.
We arrived during the dinner period during the week. The host pleasantly told us that we had to wait for a table, but assured us that we would have to wait for a table no longer than 20 minutes. After informing him that we would like to wait at the bar, he escorted us there.
And there we sat for the 20 minutes, ignored by the bartender who chatted with the other waitpersons, other customers, and washed the glasses. She never looked up to attend to the newcomers at the bar, and was not attentive enough to notice any attempts to gain her attention. After the 20 minutes the host came up to us to bring us to our table.
We complained to him about the lack of attention. There was no apology given, only a statement "I will talk to her".
The server was attentive. Our menus were given promptly, some nice bread was put on the table. After a short interval, our order was taken. Fifteen minutes later, our server returned and apologized that they were out of my appetizer and my husband's dinner choice and would we please choose something else.
After what seemed to be an interminable wait, our food was eventually brought out. It was just OK, nothing special, and overcooked. The most positive thing I can say about it was that the food was warm. It took a long time to get the server's attention to get a fork replaced, and also to bring the check.
All in all, a very dissappointing experience.
Also, recently heard a rumor from another restauranteur in the area that the Black Horse Inn, Pub, and sister restaurant Mackenzie's has been sold and to the people that bought the Public House!
