FYI for all of you FiDi dessert lovers -- the Just Desserts in Embarcadero 3 has closed, apparently just in the last day or so. The sign on the door refers people looking for a bakery to Eppler's in Embarcadero One. No indication what will be in the old Just Desserts location.

I know this isn't huge news, but it was a convenient place for those last minute office birthday cakes.

Bummer! After all of our office bday parties with cakes from Just Desserts, I was skipping the cake but we recently started ordering the mango cake, which is a good change from the Weekend Cake. Oh well.

Cafe Madeline is closeby... I've only had their lunches, but their desserts look good.

Interestingly, the Just Desserts on Church south of Market is also closed. I asked the workers and they said it was just remodeling and would reopen. I asked if there was any chance they would be opening up the back garden, which used to be the best place to sit outside in the neighborhood, but they said no. Just Desserts used to be very popular but in the last few years it is almost always empty. I wonder why.

Wow...that was their main store, flagship you might say, which is probably why the one in SoMa closed too. There are others though. Have they closed also?

I used to love going to Just Desserts before or after a movie. But I'm happy to report there are better desserts just a block away at the ferry building. Miette is fabulous, run independently by 2 young women. You must check it out.

How are the cakes at Miette? They look so darling and perfect, but have had a few negative comments on this board (too dry, no flavor, etc.) Have they improved, or have you just always found the cakes to be good?

They're also pricey. 6" for $20, and that's the plainest cake. A 6" princess cake at Schubert's is $15, versus $30 at Miette. If Miette sold cakes by the slice I would have tried sooner, but I haven't heard enough positive remarks for me to be willing to gamble $20 on it.

I loved Just Desserts (in the Metreon) about two years ago, but more recently have found the cakes to be cloyingly sweet without other flavors (vanilla, chocolate, fruit, etc).

Wow, I'm surprised there have been negative responses. The cakes are pricey, but I found the flavor to be very good and rich. I've never had an experience where anything was dry. I agree they are pricey, especially compared to the value of Just Desserts (which are now available at costco). I know it's out of the way, but Tartine's prices are more reasonable.

As much money as I've wasted at Miette on tasteless cakes ... damn ... princess cake (probably an inappropriate word to use in relation to princess cake).

For the princess cake lovers out there ... anyone tried Miette's princess cake?

I just recently bought a Chocolate Tomboy cake at Miette for a steep $24 (expensive for the size of the cake). I really didn't like it. It was very dry despite having a few layers of cream. Not worth the price tag, IMHO

Gingerbread cupcakes at Miette are almost worth the outrageous prices. The spicy, slightly sticky cake topped with rich cream cheese icing is delicous. The lemon cupcake was pleasantly tangy and moist too. Unfortunately the size of these cupcakes seems be shrinking.

Could it be that, flagship or not, this was just a bad location? Some parts of Embarcadero Center don't seem to get much foot traffic from 9-5 on weekdays, much less the rest of the time when the whole thing is a ghost town. I've walked by there several times and have rarely seen more than three people in there.

That whole center is going losing tenants hand over fist (the Waldenbooks there closed down last month). I don't think the stores on the second level do well at all -- they're too well hidden from the street, and the placement of the escalators is also hidden from the street: you have to walk through the center to reach them. As someone who worked across the street for ten years, I can attest to the fact that it's simply not a very inviting layout. You really have to know that a place is there to find it (and even then, since they're not visible, one tends to forget they're there).
