Clear Lake & Becker, MN (off Hwy 10, btw St. Cloud & Twin Cities) McDonald's Meats & Coffee Cup Cafe

Two worthwhile chowstops. My apologies if these have been mentioned before:

McDonald's Meats , at 8601 Main Avenue, Clear Lake, MN 55319 http://mcdonaldsmeats.com/

Family-owned for 3 generations. Full-service meat market with fresh and smoked meats, deli items, cheeses. But their real specialty is jerky, and they have a million varieties of it, it seems. You'll often see McDonald's meats as a prize-winner at the MN State Fair. They have a smokehouse (they smoke their own bacon, ham, ribs, chops, salmon, you name it) and sausage kitchen on-site (they sell both uncooked and smoked sausages). Also, I know someone was looking for sunfish lately--it's not a restaurant, but they do sell sunfish fillets if you want to take them home and fry them up yourself. They have lots of frozen food items as well as canned items (BBQ sauces, salsas, Lehmann's Farms pickled products--such as pickled eggs.) We picked up some meat sticks to snack on--I wish we'd been in a position to purchase more than just snack items, because it all looked very appealing. Word to the wise: the spicy meat sticks are eye-watering!

We stopped for breakfast. What a fantastic little place. This place--very homey-- has apparently been around in various incarnations since 1950's. The "fritter" fresh toast here is to die for--every morning they offer a different variety, which, if I recall, are blueberry, raspberry or apple. We had the apple, which are just like apple fritters in french toast form. Just about everything is made from scratch, including the bisquits, of course. They seem to have some kind of breakfast buffet on Sundays, though, I didn't get the full story. I know MIKELOCK was looking for country fried steak recently--I would have ordered it, except, wah, they were out that morning. I can't vouch for lunch or dinner, but the menu is stacked with classics like liver and onions, broasted chicken, walleye, pastas, steaks and chops (for dinner) and burgers and sandwiches (including meat loaf, hot beef, BLT, walleye) as well as a couple of updated items like wraps and salads. But, the fritter french toast is what captured my heart. :).
