Mexican in downtown Northampton

nolight Aug 17, 2007 09:45 AM

Meeting friends who want Mexican in Northampton tonight. None of us can remember what's still open there - any recs? Gotta be right in town as we're walking. Thanks!

A belated thank you everyone who answered. Our friends were running late, so we ended up not going to dinner after all. I'll keep the suggestions in mind for later, though. Thanks again.

Is Veracruzana still there? Delicious, but very casual.

I have a soft spot in my heart for La Veracruzana... arriving in the Valley as a student many years ago it was pretty much the first Mexican food I ever had (when they used to be across the street where Amanouz is now). I've since lived in California and had much better tacos and burritos, but something about that big old Veracruzana burrito draws me back each time I'm back in Northampton.

Veracruzana is pretty good. I actually prefer Cha Cha Cha, but it's counter service, if that matters to you. Their fish taco is awesome.

Bueno Y Sano (of Amherst ByS) has replaced Cha Cha Cha. I can only vaguely remember the menu at Cha Cha Cha, but I am pretty sure Bueno doesn't have a fish taco :( and comes with fewer burrito/taco options.

Cha Cha Cha isn't there anymore, it's become Bueno Y Sano, and I had a few bad experiences with burritos (undercooked rice, raw instead of roasted garlic) so I gave up. I still like Veracruzana, though!

Of the three choices (Veracruzana, Bueno, Mama Iguanas), Veracruzana is the most edible. The other two aren't worth even trying. Caveat, Mama Iguana does $2 tapas from 4:30-6pm when you order a drink. I think I've had most of them (ends up being a regular meeting place after softball games, etc) and thought them universally bad, with the exception of the mango and pepper shrimp.
