395 (lone pine, bishop etc) but no obvious choices

i live to eat and my travels are taking me north through sierra towns like bishop, lone pine: any great choices for meals? does anyone serve the seafood from up there? anyone have
local fresh produce, for ex.?

all i find are what looks like a good bakery, some standout places for breakfast and many places with steak and burgers.

i'm tempted to go up there with a bag of almonds, a couple bananas and fast.

Schatz looks like is should have good bread, has the prices of good bread but it is the most disappointing "specialty bread store I have ever visited. Tried several times and got what appeared to be the heartiest kinds - and it was pure, tasteless fluff bread and definitely not worth the stop, the wait or the price. Sorry - those are just my opinions and I respect others here feel differently. It is almost a compelling stop because it looks so interesting -but try to do as little damage to your self here as possible by keeping your expectations low and your wallet firmly zipped.

We stopped I think in lone pine and went to the mount whitney diner (or something like that) and I'd say you should avoid it at all costs. Greasy and gross, and my salad was basically off, they didnt realise it was off as I guess no-one in there normally eats salad. Ick.

there are posts on those but they weren't all that compelling. i prefer something where a chef uses local produce and meats/seafood, if not from his/her garden, something usually lacking in 99 percent of america.

You might try the Restaurant at Convict Lake, a little south of Mammoth. Generally good food and reasonable prices for a fine dining venue in the middle of nowhere. I think its the best restaurant on that route. BTW, You might have trouble finding "local produce" as the Eastern Sierra is not a prime agricultural area. They grow a lot of onions in Yerington, but that's pretty far north. I don't think there's much "local produce" in the Bishop area.

And give Schatz a chance...its a good bakery but they also make a good sandwich...as does the Woa Nelli Deli for that manner (and they have items other than deli items). In fact: I'm disappointed: I LOVE the macaroons at Schatz, and since my husband is driving 395 tonight I asked him to please stop and pick me up some. He gladly volunteered, but just called me with the distressing news that the highway was closed for an hour due to a nasty accident, delaying him just enough that he arrived at Schatz a half-hour past closing time....
