We had dinner last night at the Aqua Terra Oyster Bar in Plainville, CT prior to an excellent James Taylor concert at the Chevrolet Theater in Wallingford.

As it turned out, Wednesday is Ladies Night at the Aqua Terra, so the place was jammed. I'll say up front that service did not suffer at all because of the crowd and was really very good.

Aqua Terra has an extensive menu of shoreline-type seafood dishes - including fried, broiled, and stuffed or steamed - and as the name implies, a very respectable raw bar with fresh oysters and clams, live lobsters, steamed shrimp and all the rest of the usual suspects. and a small selection of beef and chicken.

After you're seated They bring a basket of bread with a bowl of a tasty and spicy caponata type relish

My wife - lady that she is, opted for the Ladies Night Special, which was a remarkable deal at $12 (or $14 - I can't remember) and included appetizer, salad, entree, dessert and coffee. Each course included a very broad list from which to select.

She started with their "Taste of the Mediteranean" which was grilled eggplant stuffed with fennel and bread crumbs. "Light and satisfying." I had a half dozen oysters, which were quite excellent. Our subsequent salads had very fresh greens and a nice balsamic vinegarette.

Her main course was a broiled half lobster stuffed with excellent crabmeat stuffing. Mine was stuffed shrimp (six of them with the same stuffing). Her entree was accompanied by fries, mine by a twice- baked potato. Both had sauteed fresh green beans that were done just right.

She had a big piece of chocolate mousse cake and coffee for dessert. Apparently all their desserts are made in-house and she finished what was a very large dessert without sharing much,

The bill came to $42, without tip, which I thought was a real bargain given the portions and quality of the food. I feel certain that we will return.
