Saltenos - Bolivian Empanadas
To all my Bolivians...sorry I spelled that incorrectly. My friend's mother from college used to make the best saltenos ever. Yes, they were Bolivian. They told me there used to be a place on Northern Blvd but I don't think they exist anymore.
Do any of you fellow foodies out there know of any places where I can fulfill my craving?
I'm not surprised they've been spotted in Queens. I'm going to take a trip one day to see if they're there and I'll post my response here. If anyone tries them, please do the same.
There is an Empanada joint that opened up on 108 St in Corona (near the LIE and the Lemon Ice King), which is good...but they're not salteno good.
In last month's Digest ( http://www.chow.com/digest/3209 ), salteñas were sighted at the apparently renamed Mi Bolivia and a Northern Blvd. nightclub/restaurant that might be the successor to the place you heard about.

empanadas salteñas, mmmm, they are empanadas made in Salta style. Salta is a provincia of the north of Argentina, in the andean region right in the frontier with Boilvia and yes, the bolivians make very good empanadas salteñas, but i have never seen them here. I just came form Salta and I miss them already, so if anybody knows a place....please speak!
they are similar to the regular argentinian oven cooked empanadas but smaller and the filling is different. they generally have: "carne cortada a cuchillo" which is chopped beef (but is chopped by hand, whith a knife), scallions, chopped chicken, onion, potatoes and chopped egg. and is seasoned with cumin, spanish paprika, oregano and saffron.
