Phx: Im search of...

v
vibrant Aug 14, 2007 02:26 PM

Two things...

1. A good, old fashion ice cream shop? (not gelato)

and...

2. Any dim sum better than C-fu or Golden Buddha? or should I give Golden Buddha another chance? Been to both. Golden Buddha was a better one, but still just... mediocre. But possibly could've been an off day for them.

Thanks.

Also, a few weeks ago, I asked for some recs for a trip to AZ and I got some great response. My trip was postponed but I'm finally heading out there this Thursday. Thanks everyone for their recs and I can't wait to try them. I will post back on my trip. ;)

    Where will you be staying?

My choice for ice cream is Mary Coyle's. The homemade ice cream and the sheer menu of crazy concoctions makes it my choice.

They also cater to the kiddies, which is important to me.

p.s. the website doesn't even cover the number of sundaes and other goodies offered.

I will be staying in the Biltmore area. But also will be spending some time in Scottsdale, Tempe, Gilbert and Glendale. I don't mind driving if I can do some sight seeing along the way.

Well, I guess it will be scorching hot out that way so I guess I will have to try both Mary Coyle and Sugar Bowl.Yum, can't wait.

I'd suggest giving GB another try. Unfortunately, they do have their off days, but they are about the best around among the ones we've tried. I know Ciaogal has mentioned another place, Jade Palace possibly, that she enjoys. It sounds like a smaller selection, but it might be worth a try. If you search the board you might find where she talked about it.

As far as old fashioned ice cream, Mary Coyles comes to mind. I remember hearing about another one, but it escapes me at the moment.

Jade Palace only serves Dim Sum on Sundays...it is well worth it. It's always hot and freshly made...it you don't see it just ask...within a few minutes it's piping hot fresh from the kitchen...

I'd say China King has the best dim sum in PHX right now. Golden Buddha used to be decent but it seems like it has gone downhill.

Sugar bowl is awesome, better than Mary Coyle's.

If the greatWall reopened dim sum is supposed to be the bomb there.

no way!!! i love mary coyles - they make their own ice cream, been around forever. oh yeah - they have a sandwich that has something ridiculous like 12 slices of bacon on it.

i think the sugar bowl might be a tiny bit cuter, and its definitely in a more tourist friendly area, but mary coyles, in my opinion, has much better ice cream. and food.

I agree, I had such high hopes for Sugar Bowl, but everything was sickly sweet. Got a black cherry sundae that tasted nothing of fruit, only soppy melty sweetness. I prefer Mary Coyles -- but what I really wish, actually, is that we still has a few Swensens' open in the Valley. I don't really think as a metro area we're an ice cream destination. At all.

Isn't there a Swensens' at Peoria and the 17?

The Sugar Bowl has great ice cream and stuff, but don't eat lunch there. We did that a couple of years ago and the food wasn't anything special, but the ice cream and desserts were great.

I don't remember being impressed with Mary Coyle, although we went a long time ago and my memory isn't what it used to be.

We've tried dim sum at GB, C-Fu, China King, and Great Wall. We prefer GB, but they do have bad days, unfortunately. It seemed to me that they had the best selection.

Thanks everyone for the quick response. So it looks like I'm deciding between China King or giving Golden Buddha another try.

Definitely go to both Mary Coyle and Sugar Bowl. Sugar Bowl is a wee bit more distant from the Biltmore than Mary Coyle, but I greatly enjoy both of them. If you find yourself out farther in the east valley, you might want to stop by Nielsen's Frozen Custard. It's nothing I'd drive miles out of the way to have, but if you're already in Mesa it's worth stopping by.

I just don't have the appreciation of old fashioned ice cream shops that I used to have. One of these days, I'll make a token visit to Mary Coyle's and / or the Sugar Bowl. I'd probably be more inclined to just get a pint of Ben and Jerry's at the grocery store than visit the stores of Haagen Dazs, Stone Cold, Marble Slab, BJ's, etc.

For something different, the Shanghai Palace has a variety of homemade ice creams that are just a little on the lighter side, and made from tropical flavors like pineapple, avocado, jackfruit, ginger, etc. Share the sampler with a friend for $8.95.

I have passed by Shanghai Palace several times and wondered about it. The ice cream sounds good but how is their food?

I think there are some very good dishes at Shanghai Palace, but, also, some things to avoid. I did like the crab puffs, and the tottie rolls are also good, but, I haven't had much luck with other fried, appetizer-type stuff. I shouldn't be ordering that crap, anyway.

I've had better luck with the Southeast Asian stuff. The chef likes to serve things with a variety of greens, possibly home-grown. She seems to put mint leaves everywhere.

Check out the website. There is a link to a Food & Life AZ article. It has a nice picture of the boss. Seek her out to discuss what you like, before ordering. She is almost always there, and she makes the rounds to the tables.

i just thought of something - have you tried any of the neveria's around town? those are the mexican ice cream shops. there's one on 19th ave close to osborn, right next to la pinata called tuitti fruitti. they have great ice cream sundays and resposadas, which are sort of like shaved ice with funky flavors like chilli and pepito. really good stuff.
