restaurants w/ sleek modern minimal decor

thursdaynext Aug 14, 2007 10:00 AM

It's my mom's birthday next week & I want to take her out for a birthday dinner. I would love some suggestions. She's a big fan of restaurants that have a sleek modern design (minimal a plus!). I want to say "style over substance" but it would help if the food was good too! Any cuisine will do except Indian & Thai. She's a hip lady, but it doesn't have to be too "sceney" either. I'm also willing to splurge a bit.

FYI She's already been to the Modern at MoMa & really liked it if that helps!

    Kyotofu is always nice, minimalist

Veritas would be perfect since you can have both style and delicious food! Chef Scott Bryan's New American cuisine is superb and, of course, there's the extraordinary wine list. Service is friendly and professional. The dining room is small with sophisticated minimalist decor, perfect lighting, and a conversation-friendly noise level. Note: Be sure you are seated in the dining room. You do not want a table in the bar area.

Happy Birthday to your mom and Bon Appetit!

        Perry Street comes to mind.

Re: A Voce. While the food is excellent and the decor falls in the minimalist category, a major problem there is that when the room fills up, the noise level becomes insanely high.

Agree with Perry Street. VERY sleek and modern. (A bit to stark for me, but beautiful)

Just like Boswell and maxine, Perry St is the first restaurant that came to mind! Another two places that I would considered as sleek and modern:
              - L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon (better food than Perry St, but much more expensive)
              - Wallse

I really like Wallse - both the food and the ambiance, but I don't think of it as being sleek and modern.

Maybe Milos? Here are the pics: http://www.milos.ca/en/newyork/resto/...

                Lever House

I'd suggest Aquavit, though I've only eaten in the cafe in the front - for this occasion I think the main dining room would make more sense. The room is very minimalist and their food is excellent.

                    Jewel Bako for the interiors

One more vote for Perry Street. The architect who designed it and the building it's in--RIchard Meier--hasn't known how to do anything BUT sleek, modern, and minimal for a couple of decades now. I'd actually try to get there before dark (twilight maybe?) so you can enjoy the natural light in the room. The food, btw, is great. It's a better room and a better restaurant than the Modern.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We actually went to Lever House a few years ago for her birthday! I remember being impressed with the design.

I made a reservation at Perry St for 7pm (hopefully we can enjoy some natural light before sunset). A Voce looked really nice as well...maybe next year :)

I'm late to this game, but in case you change your mind, Insieme has beautiful, minimalist / modern decor AND excellent food.
