Gravenstein Apple Fair (split from Nihonmachi thread)
Well, I'm glad we didn't make the trek then. It was a toss between this or the Gravenstein Apple Fair in Sebastopol. The fair was fun, lots for kids to look at. There were many food booths, and I tried quite a few of them actually, but only experienced greasy, underwhelming fair food. Even the apple fritters and apple pies were not up to par. Perhaps we just chose the wrong vendors.

I made it to the Gravenstein fest too. I was kind of dissapointed that they ran out of ace cider.
Mateos tamale operation was there and there was a vendor from a new cajun restaurant in Sebastopol called Starlight. Didnt try but was impressed by his knowledge of gumbo variations (summer and winter differences) - I will try the restaurant out in the future.
I actually wolfed down the plastic wrapped apple fritter cake-like thing last night, (not grandmas fresh fried version). Reminded me of a glazed doughnut and wished a little more apple. I did like that the bread was not overtly sweet though.

A couple of years ago a local Waldorf school sold really good, organic apple cider. Is that what you mean?

I'm wondering if the "new cajun restaurant" was really The Starlight Wine Bar and Restaurant, since that is the only place named Starlight that I know of in Sebastopol. If so, sounds like a must try. Gumbo = yummyyummy in my tummy.
I was going to try to make it to both the Nihonmachi fest and the Gravenstein fair this year...I didn't manage to make it to either and sounds like I didn't miss anything, which is kinda sad.

For anyone searching in the future about this, the trick with baked goods at the apple fair (so we have learned) is to go for the things being made by the little old church & school ladies. We threw away a packaged offering from one of the apple vendors and replaced it with a lovingly handmade, came-in-a-ziploc-bag turnover from a booth full of Grandmas. That was absolutely keeeey. In savory foods, the Willie Bird smoked turkey legs are generally delicious, though can be a little bit dry if they're from an overcooked batch.
Also, the gravenstein apples themselves are of course tip top.
