Krispy Kreme
Did the UES Krispy Kreme (Third Ave and the E. 80's) close or is it still open? I have a craving but don't want to go all the way for nothing!

All of the Krispy Kreme's in my area have closed also. They opened with such hubbub - lines out the door and off duty policemen were hired to direct traffic. I liked Krispy Kreme, however, I felt like I was giving my teeth an acid bath in sugar. If only there were some way to saran wrap my teeth but leave my tongue exposed for the fatty, sugary goodness. RIP, Krispy Kreme.

re: Suburban Girl
i know they used transfats, and i wonder if their reaction to the transfat ban was to close their stores that sold fresh donuts? i think they were still open when it was passed, and i remember hoping that it would mean that i could get a krispy kreme without transfats in NYC.
i guess not.

I believe KK rapidly expanded on the basis of the popularity of its one product line, and then found itself burdened with debt and excessive operating expenses when the tide turned against unhealthy treats. A search of Google News's business section should provide you with more background regarding the company's misfortunes.
Starbucks now finds itself in a somewhat similar position....

I'm following up on bosox's comment. I walk that stretch of 3rd Ave on the way home from work almost every evening, and haven't noticed that the Krispy Kreme has closed. I'll post an update sometime this week.

I actually noticed this myself a few months ago. I remember around 2003 or so when krispy kreme exploded and you could find them relatively easily. then they just kind of went away. I looked it up and the only one left is in Penn station. I had their doughnuts a couple of times, but never really stopped in there regularly. evidently no one else did either. I guess some things were just meant to stay in the south.

re: Renguin
I actually dislike donuts but I LOVED krispy kreme. I'm sure it was pure junk but they were so good, especially those warm originals and the chocolate filled white cream. I had one right down my block that closed over 2 years ago. I tried Donut Planet but nothing compares to Krispy Kreme probably b/c I don't know better.
Buying them at on-the-run or boxed doesn't even compare by a long shot.

So is there anyplace in New York to get a fresh Krispy Kreme donut anymore? Or are my only options the On-The-Run gas stations and Au Bon Pain? I want the Donut-of-the-month! Does anyplace in New York carry them? I'm pretty sure Au Bon Pain and On-The-Run don't carry them...
