Los Gatos

Gail Aug 12, 2007 04:19 PM

In a few weeks, we will be in Los Gatos for a few days. I'd appreciate some restaurant suggestions. We know about Manresa, but are looking for a French bistro type with steak frites or mussels. If that's not available, do you know of an Italian place that doesn't just have pasta, but some nice veal dishes? If neither exists, then just a place where you thought the food was great. Any suggestions appreciated...

Cafe Marcella is an excellent Cal-French bistro in Los Gatos. It's been a few years since I've been but I think that it would meet your requirements.

It certainly is not on the scale of a Manresa, but is better than some of the other upscale Cal/Med options in the area.

    Cafe Marcella
368 Village Ln, Los Gatos, CA 95030

Thanks Ian. I checked their site and the dinner menu seemed to have an emphasis on pasta. The place looks nice and it would be close to where we are staying. I guess veal has gotten too expensive for small restaurants to serve.

That's actually not true. Most of Cafe Marcella's specials change daily, so aren't a part of their online menu. They serve some great Cali-Italian dishes. The entrees are somewhat expensive compared to the pastas though...

A couple of other places in Los Gatos are Trevese (California cuisine) and Dio Deka (Greek so great lamb dishes, not sure if any veal).

Trevese certainly has an appealing interior. The site is lovely as are the food descriptions. I understand that the site menus may not be want is actually served on a given evening. We are staying at the Hotel Los Gatos, so I guess Dio Deka would be most convenient. Of the three mentioned, which would be your choice?
        Thanks, Stacy.

Gail - Dio Deka is our favorite upscale restaurant (see earlier threads) and you can't go wrong there. Trevese and Manresa are even more "upscale" in that they have tasting menus that go for around $100/person, not including wine, and much more formal service, and a lot quieter atmosphere - far from the "bistro" you inquired about. Just thought you should know this. BTW: do get your reservations early at any of the afore-mentioned places, as they're booked pretty far in advance for weekends. Have a great time!

Claudette, we both love lamb and it is right next to us, so I think the decision is made. Thanks for your welcome opinion. Could you suggest a favorite lamb dish?

The lamb chops and the lamb lollipops are MUST haves - they are better or as good as I've had anywhere, and believe me, I've ordered them everywhere. The moussaka is the only thing I would not recommend - it's made with beef cheeks, not lamb, and the texture/taste balance is off. Try to request Darryl as your server if you make reservations far enough in advance. (He's our all-time favoriter server, and you'll know why when you meet him.) If you have room for dessert, theirs are lovely but not spectacular; however, the Greek yogurt dessert is the most unusual, and worth sharing (portions are huge). Go early so you get a head start on the noise level, and have a great time!

Just printed your message so I remember lamb chops and lamb lollipops (?!?). Thanks much.

When I was just dating my husband and lived in the area, our favorite Italian place in Los Gatos is:
        The Pastaria & Market
        49 E. Main Street
        (408) 399-3477

Can't remember off-hand if they served veal, but their pastas are very good.

Thanks, another for my list. I couldn't find a site with a menu, but found many reviews. Lots referred to it as a "great pasta place", so maybe it's not for us.

Forbes Mill. Good vibes, decent steaks, but get reservations well in advance for the weekends.

Just off the topic but still a must have in Los Gatos is Fleur de Cocoa. If you are going to be in LG for a couple of days go there for dessert or a crossiant. Their royale cake is to die for and the crossiants are very good.
