Disappointment at Restaurant August

Last night we took my parents to dinner at Restaurant August, and I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed. The service was spotty-- my husband ordered the 5 course tasting with wine pairing, and 3 of the 5 courses, they completely forgot to bring his wine. He hated having to ask for it each time, and it would always take them at least 10 minutes to get it. The last course he had, they didn't bring it at all.
While most of the food was excellent (the gnocchi, loup de mer and kobe beef in particular) a couple of items were extremely disappointing. I could not eat one of the oyster dishes, and my pork belly became overwhelmingly salty as I ate it. I could not finish it. This was most disappointing because the lobster was cooked perfectly.
I'm not sure if anyone else has had a similar experience at August, but I'm not sure that we'll be back.

  1. They do seem to have spotty service, I usually have great service there, but had a clunker one evening. I've never had anything less than stellar food there, though. Was the pork belly an app? If so, I had that one time and thought it was fantastic. And I agree about the gnocchi. Ethereal. What was wrong with the oyster thing?

    1. The pork belly was an entree that was served with butter poached Maine lobster and black truffles. The first few bites were heavenly, but as I got deeper into the pork belly, it started tasting extremely salty. The oysters were just flat out bad- flavor was off and texture was tough.

      1. Twice we've been to August only twice but both times they sent out from the kitchen the egg foam with caviar on top that tastes like fish foam mostly. Perhaps it's an acquired taste, but it was a terrible gift from the kitchen with which to start a meal both times!

          You mean the sabayon served in the egg shell? I love that stuff!

            well, it's a savory sabayon made with fish fumet, so it's supposed to have a seafood flavour...

          2. So sorry to hear of your experience. Disappointments at restaurants, especially "great" ones is no fun at all. On the other end of the spectrum we had lunch at August a couple of weeks ago and had a perfect experience. One of our best meals out ever. Heirloom beet salad, buster crab app, paneed veal, superb service from a young man named Brendan.

              We were at August this past Wednesday. It was fantastic from service to food. I highly recommend that you go!!!
