I have family coming in from out of town and they have asked to go to a sushi restaurant.

I don't eat sushi very often, so I would appreciate any suggestions on where to get good sushi in San Francisco (we don't want to leave the city).

Thank you.

I'm always quite pleased with Shimo's on Clement Street. IMHO the fish/seafood is one of the best in the city, although you can get "better cuts" at several places (i.e. hamma ko) it will be hard to match the very reasonable price/quality ratio at Shimo. I usually order the sashimi dinner combo then top it off with individual pieces of nigari sushi (Uni, Toro etc.). While the decor is a little lacking, the warmth of the sushi chef "Shimo" and the staff makes for a very lively each time I visit. I would recommend you sit at the sushi bar and chit chat with the chefs on what is are the freshest fish of the day.

Well, this is a special occasion, so I'm not looking for a bargain, but I wouldn't turn one down, either.

Fresh is always important for sushi, of course, and ideally the place would offer other (cooked) things on the menu, but that is not essential.

Not looking for any particular atmosphere, but would want a place where it is possible to have a conversation without raising our voices. I don't like loud restaurants.

Sorry if my initial post was too vague.

Marina Sushi Bar @ 2020 Lombard. Atmosphere - ok, nothing special. Fish - outstanding. A mixed sashimi plate will usually just melt in your mouth. Rolls - good to great. Service - ok.

Nice reviews for the place on Citysearch too. Seems like a good neighborhood, low key sushi bar. Do you mind my asking how much a mixed sashimi plate runs? There doesn't seem to be a website.
