Lunch specials in Central/South OC area under $15 ??

I'm curious about what kinda of lunch specials there are in the greater irvine area?
Anywhere south of the 22 is fair game, City of Orange is an exception, down to about dana point. Plenty of places have reduced prices for lunch, and sometimes offer dinner portions. What are some of your favorites?

  1. Gemmell's in Dana Point at the harbor. 2 courses for lunch $12.95. Very good and a quiet setting.

    1. Would you accept something that's not south of the 22, and not in the City of Orange, but is really really close?

We've had fantastic lunches of Cantonese food (yes, slightly modified for American taste, but you can't beat their sweet-and-sour fish, which is called something amusing like "pineapple fish") at King Harbor Seafood on the corner of Garden Grove and Harbor Boulevards in Garden Grove, just half a mile west of Orange and not even that much north of the 22.

Also, I'm a big fan of the burgers at Original Mike's in downtown SA.

And, of course, my very favourite banh mi in California are at Banh Mi Cho Cu which is at Magnolia and Hazard, not very far south of the 22, in Westminster.

I know three good Thai places off of the 55; Bangkok Taste in Santa Ana, Thai Tasty and Diho Siam in Costa Mesa. There is also an El Torito and a Korean restaurant next to the airport.

      2. I would say that Seafood Cove is a great place of your inexpensive lunch outing. Located at the corner of Westminster and Newland (between Beach and Magnolia, on the north side of Westminster next to the Taco Bell and the self-serve car wash), they offer great lunch specials for $6-8. Includes a bowl of hot and sour soup, steamed rice, your choice of entree and che for dessert. My favorite is the house special chicken. It is best to go in a group of 4 to 6, as you will get to order more items to try. The sauteed pea shoots are also good, as is the fried whole fish (for $6! make sure you order the lunch special, otherwise they might try to trick you with the $30 fish), salt/pepper pork chop, salt.pepper shrimp and the fried tofu.

Makes me hungry just thinking about it!

        1. I regularly get the daily specials at Chicago's Best in Irvine. Their specials are more about offering things not on the regular menu. Some of the specials which I've gotten in the past that are not part of the regular menu (which are mostly sandwiches): pastrami, tri-tip, chicken pesto.

I've noticed that the specials are usually on Tuesday thru Thursday. I don't think they offer any specials on Mondays and Fridays. I'm still trying to figure out if that is their pattern for when they offer their specials.

Their specials usually include the sandwich, their fantastic fries (best in OC I've found so far), and a drink, usually for $6.99. If you order a regular item off the menu, with fries and a drink usually costs $9-10.

Recently, they've had 2 Chicago Dogs, fries, and drink for $5.99 as a special. On their menu, the Chicago Dog costs $3.65, so they don't offer it as a special, that meal would cost over $10 when including fries and drink.

          1. Styx Pacific Grill on Greenfeild/Crown Valley off the 73 in Laguna Niguel. $6- $8 Asian lunch specials. Nice quiet restaurant, good/friendly service and tasty food. You can't beat the value.

Souplantation is also great. Huge, fresh salad/soup buffet for under $10 with a soda!

That's all I've got at the moment.
