I cannot speak for Montilio's but for what it's worth, I have recently had a couple of cakes from Konditor Meister at different functions. I've been very disappointed in them. The cake was dry in both of them and the frosting had a weird consistency with hardly any flavor to it.

I have used Konditor Meister for both my weddings and was underwhelmed. Yes, the cakes were beautiful, they really looked great, but were OK from a taste standpoint. I have had Montilio's once at a friend's engagement party, and it was OK too ... a bit sticky-sweet though. I'm curious to see if anyone in Boston knows how to make really great wedding cakes like NYC's Ron Ben-Israel or Sylvia Weinstock ... is the demand simply not there or what?

Hi,

I'm not a big fan of either place, to be honest. If you are looking in the Quincy/Braintree area for an excellent bakery, I'd suggest Fratelli's Pastry Shop, which is on Broad St., next to the Quincy Animal Shelter, just off of 3A, across from the Quincy Car Wash.

They have a website: http://http://www.fratellispastryshop.com/

Fratelli's is an excellent recommendation. I think you would be much happier with a cake from there rather than Montillios or Konditor Meister. Although if you have to go between those two, I would probably choose Montillios. Konditor Meister cakes are beautiful and impressive, but with few exceptions, I'm not crazy about the cake. The carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is decent and the lemon cake is pretty good, but a lot of their frostings taste like Crisco.

I really don't like Montilio's and am not familiar with the other. Montilio's cakes have that old fashioned, sugar-crazed taste. No other flavor to speak of, other than sweet.

I prefer Montilios. The frosting is old fashioned sweet, but not cloying or greasy and the cake is a good texture, not dry. Konditor Meister is more bland, IMO.

I third Fratelli's--they're great!

Every Kondita Meister cake I've ever had was lovely but tasted like sawdust. And that's so too bad because I've wanted to love them ever since, years ago, I saw their truck driving around the financial district with it's "Cake on Board Sign" sigh...

The one Montillio's cake I bought a few years back was good--but I'd still go for Fratelli's.

Fratelli's does a good job on most basic pastries and cakes. Some decent basic breads. I'm happy to have them in Quincy, since Montillio's has lost it's touch long ago. KM is whipped cream city, so we don't bother with them any more. Go to the North End if you can get there. Don't be afraid of Fratelli's.
Enjoy,

I guess I must not be a cake connoisseur, because I regularly get special-occasion cakes from Konditor Meister, and not only do I personally think they're delicious, but they get raves from most party guests, too. They are indisputably beautiful to look at.

I'm going to get to sample a special-occasion cake from Flour (South Boston) for the first time shortly; will report on that afterwards.

Lucky you! Hope it turns out well - I had their midnight chocolate cake at a 40th birthday party and it was excellent - rich, intense dark chocolate, moist! Although it made me want a glass of milk to eat it with. We ordered a small triple chocolate mousse cake by mistake (intended to be the midnight choc. cake) for my husband's birthday and it was a welcome surprise since the cake was also served to his parents. Just right balance of lightness/rich and chocolate.

My experience with Rosie's is mixed; some things are really great, others are too sugary -- my teeth feel like they're going to fall out. Their "Snow Queen" cake is excellent, and we order it from time to time. Never knew they did wedding cakes! I'm a serious chocolate lover, but prefer European-style preparations vs. their "fudgy" cakes that are too sticky. My vote for Rosie's is for non-chocolate items. Definitely pass on their lunch (served in Wellesley location); staff has been argumentative with mistakes as well.
