What red wine for Sangria

I'm not much of a drinker but throwing a BBQ but I'll be making a couple pitchers of Sangria.
Can anyone recommend a red wine for me.

Astor Wines is only 5 minutes from my office.

I'm muchly fond of inexpensive ($12-15/bottle) chianti classico for my red sangria. Also I get the knudson's black cherry juice (i prefer the concentrate, undiluted, but the regular juice works too) to add as a flavor ingredient.

The recipe calls for off the top of my head

For each 750ml of red wine

      1 Cup OJ
      1/2 cup Lemon
      1 Orange Sliced
      1 Apple Sliced
      1 Lime & Lemon
      Liquerer & Brandy

If you guys have a better recipe, feel free to chime in.

Anyone care to help me pick one ;-)

This one should be fine, though if I were making 3 gallons it would be coming out of a box (then again I live in Spain and some of the stuff in the box isn't half bad and it's dirt cheap):

            Demay Jumilla - 2004

The best thing to do is to soak the cut-up fruit overnight (with the exception of the apples) in the brandy with whatever sugar you plan to add (you'll need some). I'd skip the lime... No OJ, either. Either a bit of lemon soda added at the last minute (if you want bubbles) or lemonade would be better if you want to water it down a bit.

we're making a strawberry sangria right now and it's terrific. we're making it with pinot noir.
macerated fresh farmer's market strawberries, grand marnier, simple syrup, tarragon, & pinot noir. and it doesn't need to sit for hours like some other sangrias.

Don't laugh , but we have found that CarloRossi "Paisano" works as good as any we have tried

I think maybe a chat. pape clement from a warm year would be perfect!! ;)
Actually, Rather than laugh at you, i think that you have the right idea. It is essentially wine cooler folks!! A nice fruity jug wine would be fine imho

yeah, i was gonna say garnacha of some sort too-- maybe navarra? Rioja often has a little too much oak to make great sangria, IMHO.

I have found a soft, inexpensive Merlot (like Bogle) works well also. A little brandy, a little sugar, a little juice/lemonade, and a lot of fruit with a splash of club soda when serving.

Borsao aka Borsao Primizia. 100% Grenache at well under US$10 a bottle. Good fruit and acidity, both of which lend themselves to sangria.

Borsao also makes an excellent Rose that I have put in sangria for something a bit lighter.

An inexpensive Rioja should fit the bill, I vary my wine used based on the recipe used. What is your recipe? (More fruit, fruit juices or cordials added?)
