A friend and I are going to a movie at the Metreon (want to eat in the area) and felt like Mexican. Between the 2, which is better? Or do you suggest something else altogether? Thank you!

Haven't tried Tres Agaves, but went to Colibri last week and it was very good. All of their sauces and salsas were very good -- multi-layered flavors and textures. The mole sauce in particular was one of the best I have tried. Only complaint was prices were a little high for the small tapas-style portions they serve. Still, I would definitely return.

Like djh, I thought the food at Colibri was excellent but a tad overpriced. It's not a rip off, but everything's a dollar or two more than I expected (but what does that mean, really, since I know nothing about running a restaurant?)

The guacamole and hand made tortillas are astoundingly good, as are the soups. Salads are tasty but very small, and drinks are $$$.

Tres Agaves prices, from what I can gather off a recent SF Chronicle article, are slightly better and the menu's longer. A house margarita is $7, but made with two ounces of high quality 100% blue agave (Arette, very reputable brand), fresh limes, and agave nectar instead of sugar syrup. So if you want tequila, go there. Colibri's tequila is rather pricey, though their collection is also extensive.

Ah, Chowhounds are the best. Now if I could just find out about Tres Agaves...

Am curious about the tableside guac; usually tableside ends up depending on how good a cook your waiter is but maybe w/ guacamole it really doesn't matter. A friend was just telling me he doesn't like tableside guac because the flavors haven't had time to marry.

I could see that, but for me the freshness of a just-cut avocado paired with lime juice that's still very zesty trumps all. I hate the taste of lime juice that's been sitting around.

My one quibble with the Colibri guac is if you ask for it "very" spicy, they just add more jalepenos and the guac ends up tasting grassy because most of a jalepeno is sort of green bell pepper flavored. Medium spicy was perfect for me, maybe better with an extra sprinkle of cayenne.

I have not eaten at Colibri so I can't make a comparison. The three times I've eaten at Tres Agaves, I've gotten the guacamole - it is excellent. It's not made table side, but it is clearly made fresh and is very tasty.

In addition to the guacamole, I recommend getting the Jalisco style crumbly cheese served with warm tortillas. It's great.

The food in general is excellent at Tres Agaves. Be wary of their service level - it's inconsistent, especially when they're busy.

Again, you people are the best. Thanks! So glad to get a Tres Agaves review. I think if we end up eating after the movie, it will be Tres Agaves because they serve until 1am even on Sundays (or so the web site says.) Um, as I am typing this I am realizing that maybe that's just the bar that stays open that late...time for a phone call.

I had a good dinner at Tres Agaves last night, the Carne Asada was a particular standout. The guacamole was super fresh, but I found it a little under seasoned and hence not very compelling. Maybe we should have ordered it spicy.
