Smokey Hollow BBQ CLOSING! :(

  • m

My husband had lunch at Smokey Hollow this afternoon and was told by the staff that they'll be shutting down for good within the next couple of weeks! :( Folks, this is terrible news - Smokey Hollow is just so good (their brisket is IMO the best around and their ribs are terrific and more consistent than Andy Nelson's). I don't know the reasons for the closure...The owners weren't on the premises at the time so my husband couldn't ask. I'd like to believe that they're just relocating or something, but I know that's just wishful thinking.

So deluge them with business while you still can. They're worth it.

  1. If they are relocating (which might be the case - it's not exactly a prime location), please let us know if you find out where they are moving to.

    1. Where is Smokey Hollow located??

If you get off of 29 just south of 32, and head west toward the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab campus (sorry, I don't recall what road that is), Smokey Hollow is in a little strip mall on your right, along with La Palappa II and a couple of other shops.

Thought I knew it, been there, loved it, will miss it ...

      2. Say it isn't so!!! This is one of MrWheatie's favorite places. It would make sense they are relocating since the center is expanding and the store next to them closed, maybe someone wants a large space.

          Noooooooooooooo! This is a travesty.

Note to self, get there ASAP to try it before it is gone!

        2. We just went last night for the first (and maybe last) time. It is very good BBQ.
I had the sampler at SHBBQ and everything was great - brisket, puilled pork, and ribs - all excellent. (no msg in this food). Maybe someone will buy SHBBQ and save it...they must be looking to sell that place?

BTW, we went to Andy Nelson's the day before and Smokey Hollow blows Andy Nelson's AWAY. I can't believe people love Andy Nelson's so much - their ribs are HORRIBLE ! I haven't had the brisket or pulled pork there, but I think (similar to most plasces) they use major MSG in their sauce (true ?).

We're longtime Andy Nelson's fans but their ribs (which is the main reason we go there) are wildly inconsistent. When they're good, they're amazing - but more often lately, they've been pretty bad. (FYI, We're fans of tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs, not the tough-and-chewy variety - I point that out because some folks apparently prefer the latter!) Smokey Hollow has always been far more consistent in its quality.

GRRR...I hate it so much when wonderful mom 'n pop places go out of business while lousy chain restaurants put out a far inferior product and continue to draw crowds.

Kloby's in Woodlawn is similar--a couple earnest individuals in an unfortunate spot. PA serious BBQ'ers researched MD poorly and need traffic, the Q is fine but there is this little perception you need protection after dark...but they need your BBQ Bucks if they're to stay in business on their current little bit of Social Security and HHS lunch crowd. Rolling Rd. about a half mile north of Security Blvd., only a few minutes off the Baltimore Beltway:

I love Kloby's! And the atmosphere in the restaurant is pretty nice (with picnic-style tables). Plus they have fried chicken livers/gizzards and make a brisket cheesesteak. Wish I was closer.

          2. Today was the last day, 3pm they locked the door forever. They are closing due to "personal" reasons. A very sad day indeed.

And I thought I still had a week or two to try to make it. I was going to stop on the way home from work on Monday to try it. Poop!

We stopped by Saturday at 6:00pm, assuming it would still be open (yeah, we were planning to get in as much Smokey Hollow as we could before it shut its doors for good) but it wasn't. I was hoping maybe they just shut early for the day, but apparently no such luck.
