Best Banana Cream Pie?

I was reading the thread about Coconut Cream Pie, and thought, gee, I am not a fan of Coconut Cream Pie, but man, do I love Banana Cream Pie!

It has been years since I have had a really great piece of Banana Cream Pie in a restaurant, and I seem to remember it was at a place on or near Roncesvalles but that was more than a decade ago!

Usually if I get the craving, I make it from scratch, because I never see it on any menus.

Do any Chowhounds know of any places that serve a mean Banana Cream Pie?

It used to be the signature dessert at Senses. 'Course, that was five or six chefs ago...

    2. I, too, love banana cream pie. I'm not sure, but I thought that Queen of Tarts on Roncesvalles makes one. Too bad they're all the way at the other end of town from me...

Recently, I purchased a banana coconut cream pie from It's the Icing on the Cake, on Queen East. It was definitely more banana than coconut and was quite good, though it didn't have whipped cream atop, requiring that I whip up a batch at home.

I think banana cream pie is tougher to do than coconut, as its shelf life (bananas turn brown, alas) is shorter, which may account for the difficulty in finding one in shops.

      1. Is Barney's still open on Queen W, and serving awesome BBCP? They were famous for it.

        1. The best banana cream pie I've had was in a truck stop about half an hour west of sudbury on the TransCanada. I'm sorry it's not in Toronto ( I wish it was), but if you're ever driving out that way, make sure you stop in.

          1. Haven't been there but apparently Ruth's Chris Steak House on Richmond St. has banana cream pie on the menu.

I know this is not home made but Loblaws now has a series of home made pies, the chocolate cream pie is a bit too rich the coconut is oh so wonderful and they have a banana cream pie which isnt too bad from Presidents Choice. Try one let me know what you think. Tour boi

Thanks to everyone for the great responses!

I will definitely try a few of those suggestions - just not all at once!

                Chowhounds are the best!

The Tulip on Queen St East - I remember having a banana cream pie there and it was goooood old school pie. also, rather large it got doggy bagged and enjoyed over two days!

            2. Go to Ruth's Chris. The BCP is amazing. Dont forget to try the creme brulee

I hate to disagree, but IMHO it is in no way the best bcp in Toronto and I am a fan of the restaurant...I thought this a weak link....love the crab cakes

                1. re: robgm

Robgm, you think the link is weak and disagree on Ruth Chris so why not suggest some place else ??

                  1. re: millygirl

sadly because I haven't found the ultimate or even close banana cream pie...i know that it isn't the one at RC's tho...

              2. The best banana cream pie I tasted in Toronto was at Jump but this was about a year or two ago. Not sure if it's on their menu anymore. But if it is, do give them a try.

Fire on the east side has a great Banana cream pie. decadent.
I used to love this place, but last few times I wasn't so impressed(overall- the pie was still great though), so haven't been there in a while- so not sure if pie is still on menu....

                2. Has anyone tried the PC banana cream pie?

The PC banana cream pie is pretty darn good...

Just what I wanted to hear :) FWIW I do most of my own baking, but I actually like the cream part to have banana flavour, which seems better achieved through mysterious commercial means.

Which, I believe, has achieved banana flavour through mysterious commercial means. Good idea, though.

                          1. re: Full tummy

LOL... it is a good idea, I just haven't wanted to invest in a whole bottle of scary yellow stuff for my infrequent craving. Although what I really want is a black bottom BC Pie, like one I had in Vancouver. So maybe one of these days :)

Always hunting for the ultimate banana cream pie, and I have tried them all. Wanda's, Ruth's Chris, and on. The Tulip has THE BEST banana cream pie. They have a great Coconut Cream too.

                              1. re: Connoisseur

Tried the PC Banana Cream Pie and was surprised at the quality... but I realize what I want is a great crust, a really wonderful custard with real or fake banana taste (it's weird how I don't mind the fake taste) and TONS of real whipped cream... the last time I was at the Tulip I was not impressed with the steak... perhaps I need to make a visit JUST for the banana cream pie! Thanks Connoisseur!

                  2. I know coconut cream isn't your thing, but the banana coconut cream tart at Pangaea is seriously good. Assuming you can overlook the coconut.

They regularly run out by the time dinner rolls around. I've contemplated going for lunch just to have the tart. Having read through this thread, I'm now craving banana cream pie too!
