September 2007 Cookbook of the Month: Cast Your Votes Here

A quick fyi: I, as well as many other participants, would love to further explore Wolfert’s The Cooking of Southwest France and all of Wells’s bistro and Provencal cookbooks. But an overwhelming number of people have proposed a Julia Child cookbook, for a number of reasons November seems to be the best month in which to do that, and both Wolfert and Wells overlap Julia to a considerable degree.

With that in mind, please vote for one of the following for September Cookbook of the Month

Vegetable Harvest by Patricia Wells
The Foods & Wines of Spain by Penelope Casas
Couscous and Other Good Food from Morocco by Paula Wolfert

by posting your vote to this thread. Voting will be open until Tuesday, August 14th and I'll post the September Cookbook of the Month on Wednesday, August 15th.

I love Patricia Wells, but I feel like I've been there already.

Vegetable Harvest -- ETA, whoops, didn't read to the end of the thread!

        oops, me neither.

And the winner, by just a single vote, is Vegetable Harvest by Patricia Wells.

Thanks, all, for participating. I'll post the appropriate threads on September 1.

I'd vote Patricia Wells, as it is more useful in our kitchen. But I love Casas, too. Still, I think we need a category for the food book of the month. And for that I would suggest "Good Bread is Back" by Kaplan.

          1. NYchowcook Aug 11, 2007 07:53 AM

            I vote for Patricia Wells

(for Casas, I would prefer to cook from La Cocina de Mama or her Tapas book, both of which are more recent). Maybe a separate Spanish COTM, to consider The cuisines of Spain : exploring regional home cooking by Barrenechea, Teresa)

I'll vote for the Spanish cookbook and hope that it's in my library or that there are recipes on line.

I also suggest that Paula Wolfert's World of Food is her most varied book (for a future month). Cooking of Southwest France is wonderful, but World has recipes from Spain, France, Italy, Sicily, Corfu, Greece, Mallorca, Minorca, Corsica, Morocco (Chcken with Eggplant Tomato Jam) and lots of other unusual recipes. Look it over you guys and give it a try. It's amazing. I've had it for years and it's falling apart. There's probably a blurb about it on her website.

Vegetable Harvest - I don't own it yet, but love Patricia Wells' cookbooks. I think my favorite is actually Bistro Cooking - perhaps for a future month?

My vote goes to "The Foods & Wines of Spain."

Oooh, for once I have at least two of the books mentioned, and after looking through them, I vote for Penelope Casas. I am in the mood for Spanish food.

                              Hi Jill,
The way our weather is going these days, the only food prep I'm going to be doing is from raw cookbooks. Nothing that requires heat appeals.

I've got the Casas book and am looking through it for cool or cold food. I've bought enough cookbooks this summer so my vote has to be for Foods and Wines of Spain but the weather is going to have to break before I get real enthused about it.

In this heat, I'm not in the mood to cook anything! May have to dig out my copy of "Raw."

Ha! I've been eating dinner on the porch every night during this heat wave. I figure we might as well get used to it....

September--back to school- I'd like to suggest as the "cookbook"--all the Alton Brown recipes found @ the Food Network site.

The Foods nd Wines of Spain would be wonderful. I'd stay away from the Wolfert book since we just did Arabesque two months ago.
