Samosa Chaat & Gobi Paratha @ Wah Jee Wah in Fremont
- Melanie Wong
During my time in Fremont, I've been enjoying some great chaat and snacks. However, Wah Jee Wah's offerings can't be counted among them.
The samosa chaat was just plain awful. I had asked if the samosas were made up and fried to order and went ahead with it when I got an affirmative answer. Guess I should have asked if they used fresh ingredients or not . . . the samosa was hot and crispy on the outside skin, but the inside layer of the wrapper was doughy. The potato and pea filling had a stale and rancid oil taste. The red tamarind chutney was just sweet and had little other taste, while the green one tasted canned and chemically. This was topped off with muddy-tasting cholley. What a waste of $4.50.
To hedge my bets, I had also ordered a gobi paratha, $2.99. This was much better, a freshly griddle wheat flatbread studded with bits of fresh cilantro and cauliflower. The texture of the cauliflower was interesting as it must have hit the tawa raw with some pieces still somewhat crunchy and others softer. I liked the effect. The raita, tinted pink with a bit of chili powder, was fine. Not a great paratha, but at least worth eating if you're hungry.
The mango lassi was quite tart, the way I like it, made with kesari.
