biscuits at big city bread?
I was at big city bread (athens) the other morning & couldn't make up my mind as to what to get for breakfast when the hostess said, "we have great biscuits!" so I ordered one. I was expecting a fluffy cloud of southern heaven encased in a buttery outer crust -- but what I got was a flat, dense doorstop that I think a week later I am still digesting. Anybody else know about these? Ick. This place has such a wonderful reputation and atmosphere that I want to know what to try next Sunday morning. Any suggestions?

ive had biscuits good and bad at big city - it all depends on how fresh they are i think. personally, i go there for the ciabatta bread...I've always thought they had a great lunch (better than breakfast). They have some new menu items like a bbq pork sandwich (that looks amazing, havent had it yet) and the road-side italian, which was tasty as all get out.

re: batdown
Thank you for the suggestions -- Ive seen some of your posts & think I can trust your culinary judgement :) I really love their outdoor area with the farmers market tomato & jam sales and everybody (but me) bringing their dogs... it certainly makes up for the biscuits. Will try lunch next time, it suits my weekend sleep schedule better anyway. On another note, heading to 5&10 for dinner this wknd and very excited to try something off the chalkboard! In the meantime, keep cool in this 100+ heat.

good lord its hot in athens. i actually live right by big city and my walk to school seems to be completely devoid of shady areas. i'm wasting away. i'll be at big city tomorrow morning for some tomatos and other fresh produce. actually my first time (ive been meaning to hit it up for some time).
on a (maybe) related note: can I get bulk fresh basil and/or mint ANYWHERE in athens? everyone i ask says big city on saturday morning is my best bet. not really sure why.

re: batdown
Last weekend a lady was so loaded with cherry tomatoes that she didn't want to haul them home and she handed everybody a bunch on their tables -- they were sooo sweet that I hope she is there again I'd like to buy some. I didn't have too good a look but I'd bet you can get allkinds of herbs there on a weekend morning - just go early (before 11.) I grew my own herbs this summer and the bugs ate my most of my basil & the heat fried most of my thyme and mint (I thought mint was indestructible?) If anything, you can grow some plants from Lowes in your kitchen windows. That's my next plan.

Fook's Foods. Here is an old article about it and other "specialty gourmet" stores in Athens.

re: dinner belle
I've seen somebody's mention of chicken biscuits at The Grill (on this board) and it had me so curious I told my s/o that I wanted to try it soon, although I'd probably get a cheeseburger just for fun's sake- (don't they always taste great when somebody else makes them?)
I'll post about 5&10 this weekend! (hearing great things about skate wing...)
