Urad dal aroma

I'm cooking Dal Makhani for the first time and noticed that the whole urad dal that I purchased has a distinct, fairly strong aroma. The aroma persists after soaking and rinsing.
I can't recall any other legume having a noticeable aroma.
Is this normal or do I have a unusual sniffer?

  1. hmmm, i just took a big sniff of my urad dal, which are skinned and split. they also have a kind of strong smell.

    Yours are probably normal.
