Weird Treatment at Portofino's

southernitalian Aug 3, 2007 07:45 PM

Charlotte - I LOVE Portofino's on Park Road. Awesome food. Awesome pizza. Recommend it all the time. However, I hate to say I had the most bizarre experience tonight. I was craving their mussels marinara all day and showed up with my 10 year old (seasoned CH). We were seated in a fairly full dining room.We sat for a while, ignored. All of the sudden our waiter showed up and shouted at us, Epcot style, "BONE-A SERRA" and then asked me in "pidgin" Italian if I wanted a glass of red wine. I speak Italian and did not get it. Fast forward to him not offering the specials as he did loudly to the tables all around us. (Read: Single mom out with kid means poor tips - I'd been a waitress for years and have always been a HUGE tipper). He proceeded to dump our appetizers and entrees on the table all at once and said it was an issue in the kitchen although all of the other diners around us had their meals decently paced. He never came over to help us with the (beautiful) plates we were struggling with and then took forever getting us our check. The food was OUTSTANDING as always. I gave him a 20% tip to teach him a lesson. Was this because there wasn't a MAN with us? I swear I'm not a raving feminist but what the heck?

The service at both Portofino's has always been weird/spotty - but it's worth it.

My favorite experience is the sister of the owner(s) telling us how they have Maseratis and Ferraris back home - yet you're busting your ass everyday waiting tables in Charlotte, NC? Doesn't add up.

And talking to the manager/owner will get you nowhere. They know they're the best and don't seem to care if you don't like their "interesting" version of service.

When I had my daughter, I started to get a lot of takeout. I have found that I actually prefer it in many cases even though she is old enough and well behaved enough to go to most places now. Portofino's is one of those on the takeout list. Unless a place has a great atmosphere or it is high end, I get it to-go; it saves a little money on tips and drinks and is a lot quicker. I agree on the quality of their food and they always get my order right. Others have been marked from the takeout list becasue they can never get it right, a real frustration when you get home.

That's a great idea -- you could even take your dinner to a nice spot for a gourmet picnic!

Hmmm, I would have given him a 5% tip to teach him a lesson! Personally, I can't imagine what he was thinking.

I couldn't resist. I'll regret it in a few days. But DAMN their food is good! Best Italian in Charlotte.

I think before I left, I would have a talk with the manager.

Sounds like the guy from the Eastway location was there....but I agree, it's the best Italian in Charlotte.
