Pier 38/Nico's

I went to Nico's for lunch today, happened to be in the area at lunchtime and was ono for some fish. The special was opah (moonfish) with a garlic cream sauce for $8.15. It was a generous piece of fish, very nicely prepared, moist and firm and tasty. I got there a few minutes before noon, and the place was cranking. Took a little over 20 minutes to get my order. In spite of the amount of food they were preparing they seem to be keeping their quality up, all in all I was very pleased.

There is also a place up the pier called Uncle's. Has anyone tried it? Any reports?

oh cool I'm going to Oahu in a couple of weeks (waving hi to KaimukiMan, who helped me on another thread)

I have a coupon for this place in my Entertainment book. Am I correct in that its not far from the USS Arizona? Sounds like a place to hit for lunch after we do that and the Bowfin/Missouri, and my picky kid will enjoy a burger.

I looked at Nico's menu - can someone please explain what 'Nalo or Mac' means? I think 'Mac' is macaroni salad. Thanks!

Nalo is farmer Dean Okimoto's salad greens. You are right about the Mac.

I just googled and found the place - just south of Kailua, Waimalano, about eight miles from where I am staying. Yippee sounds like I can stock up on greens and support a local (for my meals prepared in our lodgings) instead of Safeway! Thanks manomin.

By Honolulu standards the Arizona Memorial and Pier 38 are not that close, but in reality, they are not far - about a 20 minute drive depending on traffic (more like 45 during rush hour). But yes, if you were at the memorial in the morning, it wouldn't be a bad choice for lunch - wouldn't have to go as far as downtown.

oh man, I love Nicos! I wanted to go try Uncles the other day, but the line was waay out the door, so I just went back to Nicos instead. I did catch a look at the menu though, and the prices are near double of nico's plate lunches. Granted, it's a lot more seafood focused, with more options than Nicos. It got pretty decent reviews in the Star Bulletin this weekend, but I don't know if I'd would be likely to fork around $13 for a 'plate lunch'...

          LOL...maybe once just to see

Funny when I was there the crowd at Nicos appeared much longer than at Uncles. I'm gonna have to go back when neither is quite as crowded.
