It has not much ambience (in a shopping mall) and was part of a small local mexican-themed fastfood chain a few years ago (the chain disappeared a few years ago and only two locations are left, one in La Jolla) but I really like their fish/shrimp tacos/burritos and still think that they are one of the best on SD:

Blue Water Seafood Market and Grill http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=311...

It's not a Mexican restaurant but they serve a real good fish taco. And if you're in the mood for more traditional Mexican you can head right over to the nearby El Indio--the place where Blue Water gets their fresh made corn tortillas for their tacos. And just to add, I recommend the swordfish tacos. What makes them standout from the rest, in my opinion, is the freshness and quality of their ingredients.

I'd say your best option is Mama Testa in Hillcrest. They have a very good version of fish tacos on their menu, and a number of other tacos for people who aren't fish eaters.

I'd suggest Don Chuy in Solana Beach, it's just across from the track in a slightly out of the way neighborhood. Excellent, inexpensive beer battered fish tacos and great margaritas. It's sit down - but very casual. Address is 650 Valley Avenue, Solana Beach, 92075.

The Brigantine on PCH/Via de la Valle in Del Mar has happy hour fish tacos that are really good for about $2..
Las Olas in Cardiff, Juanitas taco shop or La Especial Norte in Leucadia are really good too!

Encinitas and Leucadia recommendations for you here

I love the fish tacos at Bety's Mexican Restaurant in Encinitas. I love Bety's period, as do many other North County Folks.
